I’m an EE major and am deciding if it’ll be appropriate to take on a finance minor. I’m genuinely interested in finance and may be open to working in finance after graduation (although that’s not my primary reason for studying finance). I’m also heavily considering entrepreneural pursuits down the line. Do the two disciplines complement each other well? Would the curriculum be too difficult and worth the extra effort? Will there be any benefits in employment?
While looking for an entry level EE position, anything extra is a plus…but be prepared to explain why you completed the minor in finance…
Bad = “I’m thinking of working in finance!”
Good= “I’m really interested in the business side, so I decided to put in the extra effort…because I’m just that kind of guy/girl…”.
Best= as “Good” + “and here some examples of the extra efforts I made in EE, I worked on this design team that…”
Having some finance knowledge is invaluable if you are thinking of doing some entrepreneurial pursuits. However, finance isn’t easy (based on your school, it can be down right hard…), and you have to weight finance classes against extra EE electives (or classes to raise your GPA).
Good Luck!
