I have been waitlisted at UC Santa Barbara. Assuming I do get in, should I attend UCSB or Cal Poly Pomona. My major is Electrical Engineering.

People have told me Cal Poly Pomona is an extremely good college for undergrad engineering. But UCSB sounds more prestigious but I don’t know if its Electrical Engineering department is any good.

My parents want me to attend Cal Poly Pomona but I say otherwise

UCSB and Cal Poly Pomona are very good colleges for engineering. As a whole, UCSB might have higher prestige, but exclusively for engineering, Cal Poly Pomona is at its par --if not better. The reason is that CPP puts its focus in undergraduate engineering… literally it’s what keeps Cal Poly Pomona from merely being just Cal State Pomona and no different from Cal State Fullerton, and the likes. So, CPP is extremely robust for engineering and at par with its UC (other than B, LA and SD) counterparts. Good luck.

so which do you suggest would be the better university?

If you know your major (your passion) will be electrical engineering, then I would say Cal Poly Pomona. However, remember that switching to another impacted major at CPP means waiting a year to be “re-admitted” to that major. However, if you are undecided, I would say UCSB.

Also, if you are planning to go to grad school, either one will be fine, for as long as your GPA and letters of recommendations are strong, and your GREs are good as well.
