Elevator in Lewis Hall ??

Okay......so I got a double in the fourth floor of Lewis Hall.......
I've been through all the descriptions on the different sites and learnt a lot....
Firstly......is there an elevator....because fourth floor is otherwise going to be a pain...!!!
Secondly......are the bathrooms really disgusting....???
Thirdly......are the singles on my floor for the sophomores??.....exactly what might be the ratio of sophomores to freshmen in Lewis???
Fourthly......'female' is written on the western side(mine) while 'male' is written on the eastern side.....does that mean that there's a good chance I'll be surrounded by 'females'.........???......:D :D :D

Ignore the “male” and “female” designations on the Lewis Hall floor plan; they are no longer necessarily accurate.
You have two choices: either wait to get there and be surprised, or call ResLife and ask them what your hallway looks like gender-wise.

lol, there’s no elevator in lewis

thank god I’m on the first floor (although it’ll still be the first floor of lewis…)

All those steps will be trivial compared to running up and down the Hill everyday…

So I spent a lot of time in Lewis this summer (including running around, making sure every room is up to par), and man, I WISH there was an elevator in lewis. But for some odd reason every architect in the 70s thought college students were capable of lugging their stuff 6 flights of stairs (probably more than that) but yes, it’s a pain in the butt to maneuver in that building.

Yes, the bathrooms are pretty bad.

There are some singles and random apartment suites in Lewis. There is probably an even amount of sophomores and freshmen, despite the fact that most of us avoid this dorm at all costs during the lottery. Basically people with a lottery number < 1800 get stuck there.

Oh, and trying to find where you are going in lewis is REALLY confusing. Once you reach the floor of destination, you’ll encounter a number of doors, which either open up to a closet, another hallway, a room, or a stairwell. Why, oh WHY did they think it was wise to make them ALL have the SAME door?

Don’t leave your food lying around…or else “friends” will help clean up after your mess. ;)

Are you referring to rodents? What is so bad about the bathrooms? Everyone seems to mention them when talking about Lewis. Does getting stuck in Lewis give you a better lottery number sophomore year (theoretically could you get stuck there 2 years in a row)?

where you live freshman year has no effect on your lottery number–they get assigned randomly, so yes, there is a possibility of getting stuck there again. However, if you find friends that you can room with who have really high lottery numbers, you just might be able to escape Lewis!

And yes, I’m referring to rodents. Don’t worry, they’re cute. And they don’t like climbing stairs so I highly doubt you’d find any above the first floor.

The bathrooms just…suck! they’re creepy-looking and they’re old and grimey. When I was working at Lewis during my night shifts I tried really hard not to use the bathroom near the lounge because it seriously looked like something out of a horror movie.

Are the singles only for sophomores or do some of them also go to freshmen ???.. and someone spoke about ‘flooded bathrooms’…???
I guess I can think of each flight of steps as one more between me and the mice…

Are there any dorms that are more up to date or at least a little bit nicer?

I do not know of any freshmen that got singles in any dorm unless it was in Haskell, an all freshman dorm where there are 2 singles per suite.

Hill is pretty nice and has BIG rooms. Tilton, Bush, Houston and Miller are pretty well kept. South is one of the newer dorms, though the rooms are narrow, like shoe boxes. The nicest dorms, in my opinion, are Sophia Gordon (seniors only) and West (a mix of sophomores, juniors, and seniors).

My D, an incoming freshman, was assigned a single in Lewis, even though she and her friend requested each other as roommates, and her friend was assigned to Metcalf with a different roommate. ResLife has straightened this out (they were very responsive) and my D and her friend will be living on the 3rd floor of Lewis in a double. My D said that 2 girls posted on Facebook that they got singles next to each other, when they had requested each other as roommates. I don’t know in which dorm. So it appears that freshman are getting singles.

Yeah the room I stayed in in hill was big. The bathrooms were filthy though

I think freshmen who get singles are typically in Haskell. If that’s not the case I know I’m certainly going to be complaining to Reslife…

The Residential Life Tufts website doesn’t say anything about ‘additional closet space’ in the Lewis double rooms while it’s always mentioned in all the other hall profiles…is it just a mistake or are we gonna have to keep our clothes under our beds…

Every room I’ve seen on campus either has a built in closet or a freestanding bureau and dresser.

Is the distance conveniant to go to the gym and the swimming pool in the morning…and then get back in time to get ready and go to class…or do I just forget about it…???

Depends what time you have class and how early you’re willing to get up. The gym is pretty far from most of campus, and thinking about it, Lewis is probably the farthest dorm from the gym (not a good thing for me, either, as I have practice there every day in the winter). It’s not more than a 10-15 minute walk, though, and if you were to get a bike (you could find one for $100 or less on craigs list after you get here) it would be a lot quicker.

How does one earn a higher lottery number, really curious?

luck
If it was something you can earn I probably wouldn’t have wound up in the situation I was in…

Since the Class of 2011 was over enrolled, many people got stuck in forced triples, and those who got stuck in forced triples earned higher lottery numbers. However, the school has done things to prevent over-enrollment from happening again in the future, meaning no more forced triples.
