I got the call for the interview today. Anybody know how many are expected to be interviewed/selected?
How should a male applicant expect to dress? business casual? suit and tie? thanks!

Congrats!
I was told that it was whatever we feel comfortable with, but a suit was not necessary. I would guess a dress shirt and tie would be the perfect balance. I just plan on a pair of slacks, white shirt, and tie.

Congrats!

I am among those of you that were selected for an interview. Iām writing because the lack of information about the process exacerbated my own anxiety. I believe that I am just slightly further ahead in the process than most in that I had my interview yesterday. Iām an applicant, and as such I donāt have any mystical information about the process to give you. What I can say is that the woman I interviewed with was very warm and that she put me at ease straight away. The night before I couldnāt fall asleep until after 1am and then I woke up at 5:30am feeling anxious. These feelings quickly evaporated when we began to speak (maybe in part because I was still physically tired!).

For those of you concerned about your attire, I can report that my interviewer was dressed ābusiness casualā but certainly on the comfort/casual end of the spectrum. I did not wear a tie and I did not feel under-dressed, however your mileage may vary. I saw another gentleman that I presumed to be interviewing (perhaps a bad assumption) for the same program. He was dressed in a suit, but he looked comfortable in it. If he felt comfortable then he chose well.

As for the content of the interview my only advice is to know why you are applying to this program. Why Yale? Even if you are well qualified for a rigorous program, why not Upenn or Brown? That isnāt to say they will ask you about other programs, but you should know what has drawn you to apply to Yale.

That said, I will repeat myself. Iām just an applicant. I have no special knowledge about what they are really looking for. I felt my interview went well but I could be entirely off-base. Obviously many that are interviewed are still rejected from the program.

She did tell me that they received ~100 applicants. They plan to interview 20-25. As has been repeated in the posts from previous years on these forums there is no cap on the number they may admit. They are looking for the right intangible mix of experience, personality, and ability that will make for a good fit with the program.

My impression is that some of us will be rejected, and that wonāt be a referendum on our ability. Some will be accepted and that is no guarantee of our future success. Iām committed to working hard towards my goal regardless of my admissions status. Iāve given it my best shot and now I need to turn my attention to finishing up term papers at the school Iām currently enrolled in.

Best of luck to all of you.

Interviews are still being scheduled. I received a call today.

I am local to New Haven (perhaps why my interview was scheduled early?). If anyone traveling here to the city has any questions iāll do my best to respond to them. If there is any input I can provide to help make your trip easier, and keep your nerves down, let me know.

Congrats to springing and vague! VaguePseudonym, thank you for the info! My interview is Wednesday :)

I just got to know the tuition is $4,900/credit. I am out. Good luck, everyone!

@marcuscolon keep in mind that Yale is very generous with aid and Whitney students are eligible for assistance up to the cost of tuition.

@springingā Thank you very much for the encouragement. I still did not get any call from Yale. I guess I donāt even need to worry about the tuition. All the best on your interview!

So Iām a little bit confused and need some guidance please!!

I applied to the EWSP- everything was done by the deadline, and I have yet to receive anything from them; no call, no email. I have received an email saying they got my application, and letters, etc. I have a very strong application I think; I grew up homeless living across the country, with drug addicts/in cars, until my 20ās when I went crazy for a few years and Iām writing a book about it. I have a 4.00 at a city college taking all kinds of hard courses (engineering calculus, chem, social sciences, bio, etc), and killer letters of rec. I was also very involved in the gay community studying and addressing rape culture, and setting up a center for it at the Gay and Lesbian center in my town. I feel like I have (had?) a decent shotā¦ but now Iām nervous as hell.

Are they going to email me saying I was rejected? Or do these only go out to people whom have had an interview?

I ask because I was already accepted to UC Berkeley and they have already offered me a full ride, and I can start taking class this summer to jump start (Iām a transfer student). So if I am rejected and they just donāt notify me, then I can start on that path. However Iām totally cool with not taking summer courses if I am still in āreviewā or somethingā¦.

Please help! Also, to the applicants that got an interview: did you have to pay for your ticket/hotel there? I find this odd because itās such a rich school, and I only ask because Iām poor. Haha- I even had my app fee waived.

If any of those questions get answered I will be SOOOOO thankful. I couldnāt find on the website when people get rejection letters. All I could find was āthey typically have interviews in May.ā

@hecate82ā first off, welcome to the mix. As for the application timeframe, I think interviews are still being conducted. Some people received calls in early April. I didnāt receive my call until the end of April. Donāt give up hope. Since final decisions donāt come out until mid to late June there is plenty of time for the ācallā to come in. As for notification, in past years applicants who were not offered admission to the University were notified in May and June. Yale will notify you one way or the other.
Now, why not take UCB up on its generous offer? Itās an awesome school that is well respected throughout CA. What are your plans after graduation? As a native of the Bay Area and New Haven transplant, Yale may be the it school on this coast but out west, Berkeleyās rep is awesome.
Again, welcome and best of luck!

@hecate82 You will have to pay for everything if you get an interview. However, coming out is not a requirement, if it is a financial burden you can do a skype or phone interview. Honestly, if I were you, I would take the Berkeley offer. A full ride is a full ride, and the quality of education you would receive at Berkeley is definitely top notch.

If it is really bothering you, you could always call the office. I have found that they have been nothing but helpful

@hecate82ā you should also keep in mind that the max amount of a Yale scholarship per semester for Whitney students is capped at the cost of tuition. You will need to find finding for room and board which may require finding a job or taking on student loan debt.

@springing @bumblebees Thank you sooo much for the feedback. And so quickly!

I emailed Yale about my application and they informed me I should hear back by the end of next week. To me, I feel this is a bad sign? But Iām ok with it. UCB has always been my dream school since I started at a city college, and I live an hour away (in Sacramento) so the transition will be easy. Plus, Berkeley is a bunch of dirty nerdy hippiesā¦ whom I love.

The degree Iām going for is cognitive neuroscience; not sure where I will go with it just yet. Honestly, if the book Iām writing goes somewhere I will pursue that. I am also considering going further into neuroscience.

The reason for Yale: to be uncomfortable, as odd as that sounds. If I get into Yale, I will be moving across the country to a foreign place, away from my friends and the only family member I talk to. I will be with a very different culture of students that Iām not familiar with (being that Iāve always been very impoverished and most of the students it will be the opposite). If I get in I will be only taking my car and what fits in it, and driving across the country. Basically itās going to be uncomfortable, which is why I want to do it because I think I will grow more there- I tend to learn more about myself when in uncomfortable settings. Iāve gotten very comfortable here in N.CA (I truly think itās one of the greatest places in the world), and itās time to shake it up a bit.

And Iām already planning on UCB and looking for roommates too.

And @springing, do you have any information about decent areas in Oakland? Living in Berkeley is super expensive and Oakland has cheaper optionsā¦ but I donāt want to live in an unsafe neighborhood.

Also, what are you guys going to school for? What other schools have you applied to?

My assessment of the EWSP interview exactly matches that of VaguePseudonym. It was casual and conversational. Itās in the low 60ās in New Haven, so I wore a sport jacket, no tie. I deemed it an honor to be considered. Congratulations to all who are being interviewed! I was told they expect to send out decisions for the Whitney candidates on, or about, June 9.

They just want to see who you are, so relax, and be yourself. Good luck!

Itās very quiet around here. Did anyone apply to other programs and would you care to share results?

I also applied to Harvard and Georgetown SFS. Harvard rejected me (as expected), but I havenāt heard back from Georgetown yet. Being a vet, Iām pretty positive about my chances there.

I have been accepted at the University of Florida. I did not consider applying anywhere else, until I received the email from Yale about the EWSP.

How about you, springing? Did you apply anywhere else?
