Coming from an Asian background, this is just my opinion. Eliminate grades preschool and kindergarten, since I remember our ‘tests’ was to just ‘name the colors’ and ‘count from 1-20.’ That was how you passed those first two years, and I don’t even think we did anything in preschool.

To be honest, I feel like this is a waste of time and counting numbers can be achieved in definitely, less than a year. I suggest instead of eliminating senior year, which actually makes applying to college a ‘disadvantage,’ eliminate the elementary school years that we don’t actually NEED. Think about it. as juniors, you’ll be applying to college. You’ll be pitted against people who are SENIORS. That’s an extra year for those who go to grade 12 to have extra curriculars, bring up their GPA, National Merit Scholar, summer internships/programs, team captains, etc. I’d move away from Utah to have the extra senior year of school.

In Asia, people go up to 6th grade, then go to high school 7th - 10th grade, then university/college/vocational school. Maybe it’s because there’s more drive in the students, or that there’s more pressure from society (and what’s happening in the US? We’re becoming lazy, including myself haha). It would be hard to change the system and make everyone happy, however.

Reading this over, it sounds slightly cynical towards our American Education System, but it’s actually something that I’m very frustrated in… in our society, at least.

warning: elitist post below.

I actually don’t think it’s a bad idea. I go to a pretty good public school in a good district in the state with the best schools and still, there’s plenty of kids who just don’t care and don’t do anything. They don’t want to be in school, so keeping them is kind of a waste of money and teacher’s energy.

Why must we always cut the most important area of government spending when the economy gets bad?

Well, the junior year is the most important year that colleges look at. However, going to college at 17 when everyone around you is 18 does not sound very appealing.

You can use senior year to bolster your level of mathematics and to help prepare yourself for college. Don’t forget the stress of choosing colleges and applying to them. Having to figure out which colleges you want to go to before your junior year can make everything extremely overwhelming.

Also, you can get a job your senior year and use that to help assimilate yourself to the real world.

If you take advantage of the classes your school offers, your senior year can be more fulfilling than just marking the days until graduating and waiting for prom.

“there’s plenty of kids who just don’t care and don’t do anything. They don’t want to be in school, so keeping them is kind of a waste of money and teacher’s energy.”

hmm, i got the impression that the slackers would need to stay in school that extra year, while the more motivated kids had the option of taking it off. it sounds okay to me. but last year my AP USH teacher-who has been teaching for something like 30 years-was like “i really hope they eliminate the second semester of senior year all together, one of these years,” haha i think that would actually be the best, for me :]
