D was accepted and her stats were somewhere in the middle range of what has been listed here. I am really stunned at the stats of some of the students deferred, they are very strong. There are students from D’s school that were deferred EA with stats stronger than some accepted. There did not seem to be any common factor among those accepted, except that most of the accepted EA students visited campus at least once. (at least that was the information as of this morning). The GPA’s and SAT’s of D’s friends that were accepted ranged from a 3.0 GPA (no weighting since the student did not have any AP or Honors classes) with a 27 ACT that was accepted ED to a 3.9 (unweighted with 5 AP’s and 4 Honors) and 31 ACT/2050 SAT that was deferred EA.

Did any of the students that were deferred EA NOT visit campus? I am just wondering if that may be a big decision factor. Congratulations to those accepted!

Another deferral here with a capital D for devastated. She is second guessing her decision not to apply ED. But we didn’t get our second visit in until after the ED deadline.

I really think in my d’s case, and in several cases, the SATs may have been the deciding factor. They don’t tell you that at info session exactly, but I do remember some reference to that. And I do know they care about visits – but we did. Oh well…gonna be a tough 3 months.

D deferred. Was accepted to Emerson Film school, Northeastern, UNC Wilmington. D is thinking that if Elon wasn’t happy with what they saw on her application, then maybe Elon isn’t the place for her.

Understanding Early Action Decisions
December 16, 2009
In the years since Elon introduced Early Action (EA) for applicants, the program has grown considerably. EA is historically our largest and most competitive applicant pool each year. That is likely to be the case again this year. It’s a bit early to be certain since our Final Deadline of January 10 has yet to arrive.

Early Action this year at Elon grew by 8%. On Friday afternoon we finalized 5617 decisions. We’re both exhausted and exhilarated because you are truly an impressive group. Wow! You’re smart, passionate, enthusiastic and goal-oriented. As a matter of fact, you’ll fit right in with our currently enrolled students!

Admission to Elon is competitive. The majority of our applicants are within our academic profile. The admissions staff labored over decisions. We’d really like to admit every student who loves Elon so much. But we can’t. One of the reasons you decided to apply to Elon is the size. Our work requires us to limit the number of offers of admission so we can maintain one of the key attributes of the university you find so appealing.

On Friday, December 18, all decisions will be posted via On Track at midnight EST. We have admitted 47% of the EA applicant pool. A large number of very strong and talented students have been deferred for midyear grades. This will allow you to strengthen what is already an outstanding profile while demonstrating your continued interest in attending Elon. Deferred applications will be reevaluated following receipt of the requested academic information. Your application has become part of the Final Deadline pool and we will release final decisions on March 15.

Just 2% of this year’s EA pool remains incomplete. Our records staff has once again done a superb job of processing information. Given the volume of applications – and the short turnaround time – I am exceedingly proud of this high level of work. Incomplete applications should be completed ASAP. You can determine what is missing by checking On Track and using the log in information we provided via e-mail and letter shortly after your application arrived. EA applications completed between now and January 10 will be notified of an admissions decision on March 15.

We know you are excited and ask for your continued patience. We cannot release decisions by phone so hang in there until midnight tomorrow.

I am really surprised at the high stats for some of the EA deferrals here.

D was accepted ED, and I think that was the right route for her because her numbers are lower than some of the EA deferrals. (ACT = 27, GPA = 3.2 UW, 4.0 W using Elon’s 6.0 scale, 14 honors classes but only one academic AP, plus AP Studio Art, no AP scores since both classes are this year). I think the difference for her was very strong EC’s - Class Officer for 4 years (class of 400 kids), Varsity team captain, Peer Leader, Peer Mentor, NHS, summer job as a lifeguard, and competitive dance for 10 years. She also had lots of community service - coaching in her sport at summer clinics, tutoring, service projects with NHS, etc. On top of that, she’s one of only 10% of her class that will be leaving the h.s. during 4th term to do a “senior project.” Her recs were outstanding, although one of them focused more on her character and leadership than on her academics. She received a letter from Elon yesterday inviting her to apply as a Leaders Fellow, which she had been planning to do anyway.

D thinks that was the key for her - strong ECs, volunteering and leadership. Elon seems to be the type of school for people who love to get involved and help out, even more so than at most colleges. Her good friend with a higher GPA but lower test scores, and solid but not outstanding EC’s was not accepted. :(

For those of you who were offered the Presidential Scholarship, how did you find out? Email? D has another friend who was accepted EA with a 32 ACT and a strong GPA, I don’t know if he was offered a Presidential Scholarship though.

And for you high-scoring, high GPA deferral people - I’ve gotta think good news will still be coming your way! I’d send a letter indicating that you are still very interested in Elon, and hopefully that combined with strong Mid-year grades will do the trick!

They told us about the presidential scholarship in our admissions acceptance email. Also good luck to those who were deferred. I’m sure you will all get in RD. Also Lafalum, they invited those who received the presidential scholarship to apply to the fellow’s program, if that helps at all.

All I have to say is w-t-f… I don’t care because Elon is my last choice but if they think that they’re making it look like it’s harder to get in and its going to make me want to go there more…they are going to be sorely disappointed. They want my first sem grades - like that even changes my GPA? And like I’m going to have senioritis? I already got into UGA, my second choice, and will hear from Carolina (first choice) in January.

They could probably just look at my SAT score recipients and see they were my last choice. The list was Carolina, UGA, Appalachian, University of Florida, and University of Maryland-College Park. Yeah.
