Elon & Furman Gluten Free Dining?

This discussion was created from comments split from: Daughter with Celiac disease, needs Gluten Free dining options.

Can you tell me more about Elon and Furman’s gluten free dining???

I would love to know the answers to these questions also about Elon!!!

This is a 3 yo thread. If anything, GF options have expanded dramatically in the last few years. Presumably most colleges have a dining services web site that should be the first place you look.

Our daughter is a senior at Elon now. She is in Mill Point apartments now and cooks for herself, but Elon took great care of her when she was eating on campus. The main dining hall (Lakeside) has a separate area of the kitchen where they prepare gluten free options with color coded knives and cutting boards to prevent cross contamination. The food at the gluten free/ Allergy station is so good that my daughter had a problem with her friends choosing that instead of the “regular” choices and leaving none for her :). She has several other allergies and when there was nothing she could eat the chef would prepare her pretty much a made to order meal. They even offered to order foods to keep on hand that she could eat. We could not have been happier with her dining experience at Elon. Every dining hall has options for gluten free. There is also a salad bar at Colonnades that was a standby for her. I’m guessing it’s better now, because they keep improving, but it’s definitely worth a call to food service. I did a lot of that when our daughter was searching for colleges.

My daughter, who is a JR this year, had a roommate last year who has Celiac’s. The roommate requested, and was granted, housing with a kitchen, so that she could cook for herself. She pulled in my daughter as her roommate and they lived in the Oaks last year. It is apartment style living and usually is for upper classmen. My daughter receives academic accomodations and I have found Elon very accommodating and helpful. But it is something I would look into ahead of time with the School. Not sure where my daughter’s friend lived freshman year, but I assume she ate in the dining halls most of the time.
