Elon or UNCW

My son's been accepted to both. waiting to hear on honors app for UNCW. out of state tuition diff. is about 13K. Have received $3500 Merit from Elon, waiting to hear from UNCW/Honors and both for Fin. Aid. That aside for now any opinions on which is better?

rd1678 Thanks for posting this. I will be anxious to see any responses. My D is in the same situation. We are in state, she has been accepted into the Honors College at UNCW and is very impressed, likewise she is a Presidential Scholar at Elon. She applied for one of the Fellows programs at Elon. If she gets accepted into the program we are going to have a tough decision on our hands. The Honors College at UNCW provides fabulous housing, priority Registration and small classes. It is a fun atmosphere too. However it is lacking in sports. Elon has great D1 sports wonderful academic atomsphere, and is truly the "full package’ for us. Unfortunately our decision will come down to money.

clara 2012 - thanks for posting. does look like we are in the same boat. let’s keep in touch.

My son has been accepted to both as well. We are very impressed with Elon but concerned about the cost and anxiously awaiting financial aid decisions. We don’t expect to get much aid as our EFC is close to Elon’s cost of attendance. We are oos so difference is at least 10k more for Elon. I feel like my son could be happy at either school but Elon seems to have stronger academics, career placement, more personal attention and graduates more students in 4 yrs.

Vamom. Yes we r still waiting as well. Very tough decision. Guess it all comes down to $$. Is is down to just those 2? We had 4 but can’t afford his top choice. Penn state. Well come back & let us know what I decided.

Yes, he has it narrowed down to these two. He is waitlisted at a couple of others that would be easier on us financially, but even if those came through I think he would still choose Elon at this point. I’m hoping he can at least get work-study. Anything would help!

Elon it is!!! with a big sigh of relief. What a long strange trip it’s been……

Congratulations! Did you receive your financial aid info from Elon? We are still waiting.

Have you checked Ontrack lately? Ours appeared there several weeks before it came in the mail. Check under the financial aid for year 2012 tab, rather than the financial aid letter tab. Good luck!

Yes, I check ontrack daily, sometimes 2 or 3x a day:) Still nothing. I’ve also called to make sure they have everything they need from us. It’s OK. I’m sure it is an extremely difficult process and I know Elon tries to spread out the financial help as much as possible. I’m just anxious to have all the info in order so s can make a final decision and we can move forward.

vamom - anything yet? ours finally came online last wk.

Got our info yesterday. Not a lot of aid, but that is what we expected. My son has already earned 16 hours credit through AP classes and is taking 4 more AP tests next month. Does anyone have experience with entering Elon with AP credits. Is it difficult to skip the first semester of bio or physics and still do well in the upper level science classes? I don’t want to put him at a disadvantage but taking the ap credits could be a huge savings in tuition for us. I have heard some kids take the science and calc classes even if they have the ap credit. Any thoughts?

the only thing that I heard at orientation last wk. was something about that if you get a 4 on an AP you can skip the beginners/entry level class. ie: Stat, you wouldn’t have to take that? but a higher level math? So is he going there? or still deciding between UNCW & there? or anywhere else? are you from VA? any schools he’s considering there?

Yes we are from VA. Mary Washington was the state school he considered but I think he has written that one off . The Elon campus just seemed more vibrant to us and the kids seemed happier with their overall experience. He was just drawn to Elon from the beginning and it does seem to be the best fit for him. UNCW is in the running because it has a good bio program that he is interested inbut for overall academics we like Elon better. I am fairly certain he will end up at Elon.
