Does anybody know anything good, bad, or interesting about Elon University that would be worth sharing. I am thinking about applying there but I do not know too much about it. The inside scoop, dirty details or anything would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi - please check out the Elon forum in the Colleges section - you will find a wealth of info on Elon. I think many of the posters speak well of the school. I personally have visited several times - S1 was accepted there - and although he chose to go elsewhere - we were very impressed with the school and recommend it. Beautiful campus - nice size of about 5500 - not too small and not too big - wide variety of majors. So - check out the Elon forum for more details.

Ditto what rockvillemom said. My son applied, was accepted, and got a merit scholarship. He ended up enrolling elsewhere, but reeaallly liked Elon a lot. D’12 was with us on the day of the tour and also fell in love with it. I have a feeling we’ll be visiting again.

My rising junior really likes Elon. He is going to a soccer camp there soon, so he can look at it a little closer. I was very impressed when we visited this past spring.

Elon’s “engaged learning” curriculum allows students to work closely with professors and other students to find their passion. They also really encourage study abroad and service learning. It really seems like they help students reach a level of self awareness in a local and global sense. These are just my impressions from our visit and tour. Two children of one of my co-workers graduated from Elon. Both of her kids loved Elon.

Where are you located. It’s definitely worth a visit.

DougBetsy - us too - top of S2’s list. Planning to visit again in the fall.

Thanks for all your help! As for BUandBC82, I am from Chicago.

My brother went there and loved it- the surrounding area is little unsafe and crime ridden, but the campus is pretty and they have some great sports programs.

I have traveled to Elon several times, S is a rising junior. Have never heard of nor felt the surrounding area in Elon or Burlington being crime ridden or unsafe.

^ eggirl1984 - I think you must be thinking of a different school / town…

Elon University is surrounded by the quaint and lovely town of: you guessed it Elon. Walking on and off campus is a relaxing pleasure. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty to do and with the majority of upperclassmen living off campus its certainly a college town, but on or off campus it’s always felt very comfortable and as safe as anyplace could be.

The largest nearby town (a bus/car ride) is Burlington and is known for it’s shopping, good food, and neighborhoods. I’m sure you can find some less desirable areas of Burlington (like any larger city) but most nonresidents would have to work very hard to find them.

One detail that I think says volumes about Elon is when USNWR came out with their new list of “Best Colleges -Academic Programs to Look For” last year, Elon was mentioned in 7 of the 8 categories. More than any other College or University in the country…

I liked the fact that it was the first year the list came out so you don’t see schools that are just trying to improve their ranking by getting on the list. Your just seeing a reflection of what good schools think makes an important difference in the quality of a students education, and it doesn’t surprise me to see Elon listed so often on a list with that criteria.

Its a fabulous school. Wonderful administration. Warm and endearing people. Elon graduates are prized by employers for their “can do” spirit and work ethic. What sets them apart is their lack of attitude (cf. like some “other schools” that will go unnamed.)

Elon is a strong school making a lot of headlines as it climbs up the national radar screen of many ratings. Its a safe area. Its not a party school, but its not a tombstone cemetery either. Their sports programs are also gaining notoriety. Its not quite to the level of Davidson or even Furman…but they are striving to get there and many think they will reach it.

It is becoming increasingly competitive and now is considered highly selective. Kids that may have gotten in five years ago, may be shocked to learn they may not get in today. Or if they do, without a merit scholarship. Lots of schools will tell you they are improving and moving up the ranks. Elon REALLY is.

If you drive around the parking lot during the school year, you will no longer be seeing a plethora of NC license plates. You will see instead a plethora of license plates from up and down the east coast and even some Texas and Midwestern plates. Its a gem of a school. Really good people.

And don’t forget Elon qualified for a Phi Beta Kappa chapter this year.
