email from UCB requesting you apply for scholarship

if you got an email from UCB saying they want you to apply for the Alumni Scholarships, does that mean you are in?
why would they send this if you weren't in?
did others get this?

Is it the Regents Scholarship, or the Alumni Scholarship? I know that for Regents it means you are in, but I can't say 100% for sure about the Alumni Scholarship, although I would guess that you are in.

It was an email sent 1/26 and it describes Alumni Scholarships, then it says "you are receiving this message because we want you to apply for the Leadership Award. Leadership Awards for California Residents are worth $7,000. over five years at Berkeley and are given on a merit-only basis to students who have taken leadership roles through their schools, extra-curriculars, volunteer work, employment, or in extraordinary personal circumstances".

however, at the bottom there is a disclaimer that the receipt of the "scholarship invitation" does not reflect on eligiblity for admission to UC Berkeley or for Alumni Scholarships"...I just saw this

but still, it makes you wonder why they would send it if you weren't in?

They send it to all applicants, you should apply for it, by the time people go through the essay and interview process, admissions decisions have been made, so they only offer it to people who got it, but it takes a while to narrow down the field & they try to let you know before the May 1 commitment deadline, so that you are able to consider those $ in your decision.

ok thx, it still seems like they wouldn't want to wade thru a bunch of scholarship apps from people who weren't accepted

Greetings Cal Applicant,

UC Berkeley would like to invite you to apply for an Alumni
Scholarship!

Although Admissions has not made a decision about your application, you
may
be eligible to apply for the Achievement Award Program (TAAP), a
scholarship
and support program for first-year and new transfer students to Cal.
Sponsored by the California Alumni Association, the TAAP award is worth
up
to $23,000 over four years.

It is only available to incoming students, so this is your only
opportunity
to apply!

everyone gets it, all my friends did

well, not everyone, we didn't get that one...just the leadership one

Are you serious that 'everyone' (for all intents and purposes) gets it? What leadership did they have?

I didn't say that everyone gets it..but flong is saying that about the TAAP; however, my d did not get the TAAP letter

my d is the one who got the leadership letter (not the TAAP one). She has a very good leadership resume (pres. of her hs community service club, etc) also overcoming obstacles (financial, parental illness)

interesting that the leadership award states over five years...that seems odd, but hey, we'll take the extra year in case she goes on the 5 year plan

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=290692

hope that works-- takes you to a thread about TAAP- you have to have participated in an outreach program from the UC to be eligible, so my d is not eligible for that

it does seem like there may be some method to who gets these emails; not just totally random

yeah i dont think the scholarship (leadership and alumni) mean very much about ur application process. The Regents does not guarantee admission either but the regents is only given to the top 1.5 percent of applicants and if you are in there, that generally means ull be taken by the UC.

What if they sent it to you three times? Maybe that means something?
Haha...probably just some computer fluke, but a girl can hope!

LOL the only scholarship that really means anything about ur admisison is getting the regents and those who do get the regents already know that they'd get into Cal or LA. Applicants who only have like a 4.2-4.4. and a 2200+ get regents and thats well above the average sat and gpa requirements so they know they are safe.

We're all scared and are looking for things to give us hope but based on your GPA, SAT, and EXC you should know where u roughly stand. Cal has an avg 4.17 w UC gpa and around a 2020-2040 avg. If ur below in both categories chances are slim, if your above in one you have a decent chance, and above in both you have a very very good chance of getting that admit letter.

at the very bottom of the alumni scholarship e-mail, it says:

PLEASE NOTE: Your receipt of this scholarship invitation does not in any way
reflect on your application for admission to UC Berkeley or your eligibility
for Alumni Scholarships. You are no more or less likely to be admitted to UC
Berkeley because you have received this invitation and your decision to
apply or not to apply for Alumni Scholarships will not affect your
admissions status. Alumni Scholarships are sponsored by the California
Alumni Association, The University of California Berkeley Foundation, and
the Regents of the University of California. If you have already submitted
an application for an Alumni Scholarship, please disregard this message.

I'm applying as a transfer applicant and I also got the alumni scholarship letter, however I don't know if I qualify. Since I didn't graduate HS from California I haven't done any of the UC outreach programs, however the TAAP thing says that it is any program which helped advanced the academic careers of underprivliged kids (something to that extent). When in HS I did to INTERACT, which was a comm service organization...one of the things I personally did in this organization was tutor kids who weren't doing well in a particular class. Does this count? Would they send me the letter if I didn't qualify? Should I call someone and ask about it or just apply? Gracias

I am confused by this message. Should I apply for the leadership scholarship or the achievement award?

Dear UC Berkeley applicant,

For over 70 years, Alumni Scholarships at UC Berkeley have awarded the very
finest student leaders from across the country. This year, we will give out
some $2 million in undergraduate scholarships to more than 800 students. You
are receiving this message because we want you to apply for one of our two
scholarship programs:

-Leadership Awards are worth up to $11,500 over five years at Berkeley and
are given on a merit-only basis to students who have taken leadership roles
through their school, extra-curriculars, volunteer work, employment, or in
extraordinary personal circumstances.

-Achievement Awards, worth up to $23,000 over four years at Berkeley,
consider financial need and honor students who, in addition to taking
leadership roles, will bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to the
Berkeley campus.

Alumni Scholarships offer a host of non-monetary benefits as well, including
alumni career and internship networking, counseling services, discounts at
the Cal Student Store, and special community events throughout the year.

For full eligibility information and an easy-to-use online application, go
to http://alumni.berkeley.edu/scholarships. Applications are due by February
15, 2007--so don't wait, apply today!

Best,

Most of you will be applying for the Leadership Scholarship. The Achievement Scholarship is for those who come from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds and/or are an underepresented minority.

The invitation to apply has no reflection on your application status. I'm an Alumni Scholar and I know there's no way that the Alumni Association can call up the Admissions Office to ask for a list of students who they think are qualified or whatever.

Definitely give it a shot! The essay isn't so bad, given all the ones you've already written.

it doesn't hurt to ask; but I think TAAP was pretty specific about having participated in UC connected outreach. My d is pres of Interact at her school, but reading the requirements for TAAP it didn't look to me like that qualified.
but let us know what you find out!

Thanks for the help. It certainly never hurts to try.

Our son got the same message from UC Davis ...and applied for Alumni scholarship but hasn't been accepted yet.
USC works the same way...their deadline for Alumni and other scholarships was Dec 11th...before any acceptances.
