Emailed professor about research, he emailed back-

“I’m beginning a new research project this summer, but I am afraid I do not have any funds to hire non-XXXXX UNIVERSITY students. If you still want to discuss this, please let me know.”

It seems as if he thought I wanted to be paid, which of course I don’t expect… But not sure. How exactly do I go about replying if my suspicions are correct?

(apologies if you saw this in the Summer Programs forum already, but I didn’t get any responses and I need to reply to his email asap!)

Are you a student at that university?

If yes: Then email him and say you would be happy to have this opportunity.
If no: Then email him and say you would be happy to have this opportunity.

Let him talk about the money thing… all he’s saying is if you still want to discuss it, let me know. So let him know you’re interested! You could say something like, “Thank you for getting back to me. I’m actually not looking for any sort of income, I’m interested in this just for the experience. I look forward to hearing from you.”
