Emailing Deans?

Hey guys,
I decided to post this question on here firstly because Dean J is the most active dean on CC and secondly because I've posted many questions here and have gotten good responses.
Anyways, my question is; is it alright to email deans? I've emailed a couple deans, some emails containing thank you notes from visits at the college and other emails containing questions. I just wonder (this is more pointed at you Dean J), what do deans feel like about a student when they get the email. Do they think in their head "ohh, here is another over zealous kid" or "here is a kid who has a true interest in the school". I guess that question depends on what the student is asking but still. Is it alright to somewhat have a conversation with the dean your emailing.

Also, just letting you guys know, after long thought I'm applying ED. Before you say "but I thought UVA was your dream here is my reasoning. Eventually in life I want to move overseas and work in business. Mcintire is an amazing business program (one of the reasons I'm so in love with UVA) however wharton is also amazing. I feel like my chances of getting into wharton are .001% so why not take the risk. If I get in so be it it's my second choice after UVA anyways. I basically know I'm not getting in but I'm applying ED anyways just because I feel like if I don't apply ED somewhere the extra chance of me getting in at a school is wasted...

Thanks for the help again guys and I hope your summers are going well...

P.S. although the 31 I got at the begining of the summer basically ruined my summer I just passed my drivers test which feels great! (atleast I didn't fail everything this summer)

are you kidding me…?

There’s no universal reaction to prospective student emails. I’m sure there are some professors who love to chat with high school students about what they do. I’m sure there are others who are so busy working with their current students that they have a hard time responding to those emails.

Hmm, thanks for the response Dean J. I know your pretty chill (yes I just used the word chill) so I’m sure you don’t mind emails, probably even enjoy them because your the most active dean I know by far (blog, here, quick responses to emails).

I wouldn’t e-mail the deans, they’re busy people. Might also cause you to come across as a suck up, which is never cool.

I guess, but it could also come across as a student who has a true interest in the school? Its a risk you take, and my emails arne’t “omg, I love your school and your the most awsomest cooliest dean around!”

No i know, but some things are just meant to be left alone. Let the application do the talking and see what happens imo.

Remember that demonstrated interest isn’t a factor in our application review process.

Exactly, I mean demonstrated interest dosen’t even factor in at UVA so… But Dean J, how much do you think demonstrated interest counts at school that does factor it in? I’ve heard of kids who have been denied from colleges partially because they don’t show interest. I mean at schools like Emory demonstrated interest matters. I’m applying here but its not on the top of my list so I’m not going to visited which could ultimatley hurt my chances? If I’m not visiting a school but they count demonstrated interest should I email a Dean just to show I’m interested?
