I sent to columbia my sat results and my school sent two recommendations letters and a copy of my transcripts, then I received three e-mails from columbia (fin aid office, alumni and student) as well as three letters (viewbook, application info, the blue album, and other things).

I am really happy every time I hear from them but before I get to excited, I wanted to know if these letters and emails mean something.

They say nothing about your chances if that is what you were thinking.

They are just generic marketing material; in fact I think they send out exactly the same letters from an alumni and student every year!
Just take them as an indication that they have at least received your materials, but other than that, they do not mean anything.

Well, the question is what do the emails say? It’s generally easy (at least for an experienced eye) to tell whether the letter is generic or personal/specific.
