I was wondering if anyone has heard a timeline for the Eminence Scholarship this year. Last year the application was due on February 1, the notifications for the 75 finalists came out the week of March 18, the interview weekend was April 5-6, and final notifications for the 25 winners came out several weeks after that. Because the application deadline is one week earlier this year, does that imply that everything will take place one week earlier throughout the process?

Additionally, the last two years that the Eminence Scholarship has existed, it has been run very differently. Two years ago there were 50 winners, 40 in state and 10 out of state. Last year, there were 75 finalists but only 25 winners (with no set designation of how many should be in state versus out of state). Does anyone know what the set-up of the scholarship is supposed to be this year?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, especially if it was garnered via admissions counselors.

The fellowship is supposed to have 25 members of each class. In the first two years they offered more because they did not have a good feel for how many would accept. The Sophomore class has 30 members, the Freshman class has 28. For the freshman class they offered 37 or 38 scholarships. I imagine the number offered will decrease as it becomes more notable.

How lenient do you think they are with the 5 pm deadline? I thought I’d have until midnight to complete the application but when I looked it said 5 pm; I submitted it around 6:45, so do you think I’ll be removed from consideration because I was an hour and forty-five minutes late?

Not too sure. I’d hope that you would be okay as 5:00pm is a kind of random deadline. Has anyone received any updates as to when finalists will be notified?

I aspire to be a doctor one day and currently a high school senior residing in Cleveland area. I have been accepted to OSU and will most likely receive the Eminence scholarship which covers my college expenses (tuition + room + board). I have also been accepted into the 6 year medical program at NeoMed. I am having an extremely difficult time deciding between the two and would appreciate it if someone can advise and / or provide their perspective and the logic of what you would do in my situation.

My thinking so far …

Neomed pros: Graduate 2 years earlier so earning 2 years earlier, don’t have to score as high on MCAT, don’t have to worry about getting into medical school, close to home (as opposed to ending up at a medical school half way across the country)

Neomed con: There is no break from studying since school starts after HS graduation, and you go to school during summers too, Akron / Kent / Youngstown are tier 2 school not tier 1 (can get stressed out/exhausted), Undergrad (first 2 years) will end up costing me total of around $62K, whereas, OSU will be zero, not much opportunity to take diverse courses and be a more well rounded person, poorer placement during residency;

OSU pro: FREE and can use the money for med. school where very little scholarship is available, get summers off so will have change to travel, work, do internship/research, etc., can take diverse courses and be a more well rounded person, better social life and definitely more fun experience

OSU con: Will take 4 years instead of 2 years so will not be earning earlier, must perform very well and must score high on MCAT to get into good med. school, have to apply to med school (lot of work and stress), may not get into decent med. school and it may be far from Ohio,

My son is an alternate at NEOMED, and received a decent scholarship from Akron. On the other hand, he only received the Provost scholarship at OSU. If you’re receiving the Eminence at OSU, I can’t imagine that you’re not getting any money at the Tier 2 schools for undergrad. How are you figuring the $62K?

My son is still unsure about going into medicine, so will likely go to OSU to keep his options open and go the engineering route and take the prereq classes for premed.

You have a tough decision. But I think if my son was given the opportunity for full ride at OSU, I think he would go that route even if he had full intentions of going into medicine. Can you graduate a year early? (if you have AP classes and other credit, you may be able to do that). Just a thought.

Thank you yvrfan. The 62k is after figuring tuition + housing of 3 summer sessions minus the puny scholarship the undergrad. schools gave me (it is just an estimate for planning purposes).

I think you should try to figure in your long term goals: do you want to graduate early so you can get a job and start living on your own? And will getting the job early enable you to pay for the college costs? Or do you want to take the full ride and savor college life longer?
