Question is wait listed better than deferral or are they virtually the same?

@aphro24 You only get deferral if you chose ED1, and you get waitlist if you’re doing RD or ED2.

Did anyone get in? This is depressing. Good luck to you @aphro24

Also waitlisted… not going to go by the form listed above since I already made a chances thread, so I’ll just repaste my stats here:

ACT: 34 (36 R, 36 E, 32 M, 31 S)
National Merit Semifinalist

GPA: 4.33/5 (extremely competitive school)
No class rankings are released.

Subject Tests:
Math 2: 730
Literature: 710

AP Classes Taken (received scores of 4 on all of them):
AP Latin, AP Physics B, AP US History, AP European History

AP Classes Currently Being Taken:
AP Microecon, AP Macroecon, AP Calculus AB, AP Environmental Science, and AP Art History

(9 total APs by the end of my senior year.)

Really good EC’s. Flew to Washington DC as part of a year and a half long research paper I conducted on the effects of money on the political system. Interviewed congressmen, my state’s governor, CEOs, etc. for it.

Volunteered for an organization after my sophmore year with the goal of helping eliminate the influence of money on political campaigns.

Other general stuff like being in clubs (one minor leadership position) and plenty of service.
Gold and silver medals on National Latin Exams, etc.

Pretty good letters of recommendation and essays that were about my dedication to the issue of money in politics.
2 years of policy debate in my freshman and sophmore years.

I am literally shaking! I cannot wait to be a part of the Emory family

and wow I cant believe I got accepted while the first two posters, who are clearly academically stronger than me, got waitlisted 0.o

@Kinalrala : Emory is not a stats whore school…you’re thinking of some other schools lol. It may just use the scholars and RD applicant pool to stats whore out. Chess and being interested in CS is what may have gotten you in. While CS isn’t the strongest major here, the scene among students majoring in it, math, and some other things is really interesting (the app hack-a-thons that most schools w/o an engineering school do not have and even some with one don’t). The creation of the qtm major also makes you a solid fit. I think the other candidates were academically “better” and one had very strong EC’s, but their potential interests/major seemed to fit into stereochemical categories associated with Emory students (like those w/polisci majors as an interest may often have similar profiles). And person w/biology major may have had stronger than normal recs (students think their recs are strong, but adcoms probably see them differently and also see them in context of what they want for the class, also may have liked the signs that they would engage in something outside of their major as they were newspaper editor-in-chief)

Yea I get what you mean- makes totally sense. I I thought emory was major blind in it’s admissions process though? And yea ik cs isn’t the strongest and emory but I am going to emory for the amazing college experience emory offers itself  so excited akeheidnev

@kinaralah‌ : Well, this is what is interesting and an observation I made. I feel that at schools like Emory, motivated students sometimes attempt to fill in gaps…and it has been successful in the CS community (it seems to have started a movement where many CS majors are very activated and inclined to participate in events outside of class) and among those interested in entrepreneurship on campus (having the b-school also really helps). But anecdotal event: I showed several Georgia Tech students their way to the b-school for the new hack-a-thon that came about this past fall semester (the Coca Cola one: Just started, so nothing like the spring one) and they conceded that Tech didn’t have that many. My guess is that many Emory students have a desire to do something that applies their skills in math and CS along with their entrepreneurial spirit. In addition, one thing we all love at these types of schools is networking. These events attract funding and attention from several sponsors who may not have otherwise taken a place like Emory serious (IE such student started events could increase recruitment activity for Tech/math oriented firms). In addition they offer oppurtunities to meet others like them who may go to a different institution in town or are in a different part of the university. In this case, it doesn’t matter if the CS department is weak if students are good enough to teach themselves and motivated enough to develop and test their skills through these events which THEY created and gathered funding for. The arrival of QTM and datafest certainly does not hurt this culture. The idea is, because of all of this, regardless of why Emory picked you, the school and the community does have a place for you that you will probably enjoy if you get involved in. I honestly wish more students in other departments would take things into their own hands like this. It achieves great results.

oh and i got Accepted!!!

@bernie12 Funny that you mention the b-school as I am seriously considering doing a double major in comp sci and BA. Bringing me to another reason I applied emory ED - I have an equal love for entrepreneurship and coding that emory allows me to explore, an exploration that a certain tech school nearby woudnt allow me to make properly

@kinalralah: Note that you need not go to b-school to do entrepreneurship. In fact, typically business schools don’t really foster that in their curriculum. Again, this is just students, regardless of major, going out on their own limb.
