Recs: Should be great, asked AP Bio teacher and AP Euro teacher

Thank You. I know my gpa and sat subject tests aren’t too hot, but I’d like to know if I have a chance for either Emory or Emory Oxford. Also, I have been considering Cornell ED for the Nutrition Major (College of Human Eco) because it’s very fit oriented, and my EC’s actually go really well with the nutrition major. Emory has a nutrition minor however, so maybe I can guide it that way? Also,

Edit: Also applying to Notre Dame and Rice

@Bolsted101 : I am not really sure if you are supposed to retake subject tests. Did you score well on APs in math(AB or BC) or biology because this is more than enough evidence to indicate potential in those areas. I just feel that retakes of SAT2s should be avoided. I think they are meant to indicate a strength or a talent at the time you took it as opposed to your resilience and a willingness to learn how to take the test (like the regular SAT).

Also, community health is very specific such that not many privates will offer such a major. Simply say “health”. Emory’s Human Health program can get you pretty close to being able to do such a concentration or major, but I don’t know many schools that would label it that. Maybe go through ILA/IDS combined with Human Health to make that major along with the nutrition major. And bluntly, you may want to consider some strong public schools with honors programs which often do specialties like that better and can show you many more angles from which it is studied. For studying things like that, it is hardly necessary or even recommended to go to some top private school unless you know it will be cheaper.

@Bolsted101
You have a great app, GPA is low but since you are applying ED1 with 35 I would say
EMORY- High Match/Low Reach
OXFORD- Match
Notre Dame- Reach( RD)
Rice- Low Reach/ Reach(RD)
Have you visited Emory yet? I think a human health major nutrition minor is more marketable than a nutrition major.

@VANDERMORY1342

@Bolsted101
Doesn’t look like Cornell requires a capstone project. I feel as if those majors do not stand alone and need to be accompanied with research, internships, or a project of some sort to be truly marketable. Like biology, it is not one of those majors where just having the diploma in the field will take you far. http://www.human.cornell.edu/dns/academic/nsmajor.cfm

It isn’t about the exact name of the major and even the courses so much as what they strongly encourage or require students to do with it.

The choice here is kind of the difference between breadth of coursework vs. depth of engagement. Both schools have amazing resources, but I think since because Emory’s program may be newer and likely smaller, the depth of engagement is likely higher (same with ILA/IDS). It doesn’t just “offer” X oppurtunities, it requires you to use them. Some interesting ideas and projects have originated from the program despite its youth. Either way, if I were serious about studying health in a something different than a pre-med type of context, Cornell and Emory are amazing places for that. Pick which program feel and structure you want and less on the actual name of the major as it really won’t matter.

@bernie12 @VANDEMORY1342 Yeah, i meant Human Health major. I intend to do the premed coursework. Also for AP’s: AP Calc AB: 5 APUSH: 5 AP Bio: 4 AP Euro: 4 AP Lang: 3

@bernie12 @VANDEMORY1342 Also, thanks guys really appreciate it.

Gonna be a fun year everyone… good luck to everyone graduating HS this year (including me)

@cllge_mck1 The fact that you’re Valedictorian, says a lot about your work ethic and character over all. The “low” ACT is over shadowed by the GPA/rank I think High Match.

@VANDEMORY1342 we shall but thanks! What about you? How do you feel your chnaces are ?

@cllge_mck1 already here, you can DM me for more info if you want.

General Comments:This is a question actually,but would applying to just oxford instead of oxford and emory help my application at all?

@helpneeded723 No, I don’t think that would help at all… the admissions are separate so apply to either or both but it won’t affect your admissions to the other.

https://blog.emoryadmission.com/2017/08/honest-talk-about-oxford-college-2/

@helpneeded723
Emory- Reach/High Reach
Oxford- Reach/ Low Reach
UGA- High Match/ Match
Georgia Tech- Low Reach
Georgia State- Safety
Purdue University- Safety
Penn State- Match/ Low Match
Mercer- Match
Texas A&M- High Match
Apply to Oxford only will not help you at all. Instate schools seem to be your best bet.

I would switch Tech to high reach. They tend to recruit heavily in EA rounds, reducing chances to admit IS students. It pretty much is like applying to Emory but with somewhat of an in-state advantage.

I have concluded I simply have no idea about my chances. I was hoping you all could give me some insight as to what you think!

I am a Senior from Texas (white male) currently working on my application for Emory ED for the class of 2022.
GPA: 4.0 UW 4.29 W
APs: Chemistry (11th), English Language (11th, receiving a 3:/), Physics (12th), Spanish (12th), English Literature (12th)
Dual Credits: US History, Biology, Calculus 1 and 2, US Gov and US Eco.
ACT: 29; 30 super score.
SAT: 1340
SAT II: taken, but have not received scores yet. (Biology E, Math Level II, Literature)
Class rank: 5/123
Extra Curricular: Marching Band ranked 7th in the state (Head Drum Major), Science Club (President), Yoga Club ( Founder and President – I teach classes for the school and community), NHS member, Spanish Honor Society Member, Robotics Club (Vice President).

I attended Texas Boys state over the summer, but have not completed any summer research programs.

Work History: Started a business when I was 10 raising ball pythons. I sold the business when I was 16 and started freelance article writing for a Naturopathic (yoga and natural medicine are two of my passions and are also what I plan to write my Common App essay about) Fertility Coach and wrote blog articles about certain therapies to help patients suffering from infertility.

Recommendations: Should be good; My principle offered, and I will ask AP Chem and Physics teacher (this is the same person), Sociology Teacher and AP English Teacher

Community Service: 250 hours being a part of my recycling program at my school, teaching yoga, and volunteering at a local nursing home.

I plan on majoring in Neuroscience (and possibly double major in Philosophy) and then attending Medical School.

I like to think I may have a chance, however, my concerns lie in the fact that 1) I am white 2) I am a male wanting to enter the STEM fields 4) I am middle class 5) not first gen, nor do I know of any alums and 3) I am from a small school, so it doesn’t offer as many classes as others (I have taken all the upper-level classes my school offers, and all the DC classes I took were because my school didn’t offer the AP counterpart). Could this affect my chances at all? I also realize that my scores are in the 25th percentile of applicants, so that is another aspect that may bring my application down.

I want to attend Emory because it just seems like a perfect balance of school size, prestige, school spirit, research, and location; Atlanta provides so many opportunities that would just be amazing.

Also, do you all agree that Early Decision is the best option for me? With it being my first choice? Does ED provide any benefits other than being notified earlier (i.e acceptance rate)?

I will be applying for financial aid.

Other schools I plan on applying to:
Johns Hopkins
Vanderbilt (both of these are stretches, I feel, along with Emory)
University of Texas at Austin (automatic admission)
Univesity of Washington in Seattle

Thank you all for your time! I appreciate it immensly!

@HerbDoctor17
Emory ED1- Reach
Oxford ED1- Low Reach
Vandy ED2- High Reach
Vandy RD- Out of Reach
John’s Hopkins- High Reach
UT Austin- Safety
U Wash Seattle- Match/ High Match
The only thing holding you back is the standardized test scores. You best option is Oxford ED1, and UT Austin.
Vandy is very test sensitive.
I’m not sure if you have time to retake the sat for Emory ED1 deadline but if you do then a 1400+ would do you a world of good. Also NBB is a great program at Emory that provides a lot of opportunities especially if you change your mind about med school and do research.

@HerbDoctor17 : Keep an open mind and do not only plan on attending medical school. There are many cool things to do with science. Coming in with the attitude of “I am mainly planning to attend med. school” will make you very susceptible to “pre-med syndrome” which sucks because you will become overly cautious in course and EC selection, perhaps so much that you forgo many other cool opportunities (including chemistry! since you say you are into natural medicine. There is actually a faculty member at Emory named Cassandra Quave who specializes in just that for her research. You never know, research or something else could be a more interesting way to pursue that interest). Just stick with " I am interested in the neuroscience major and may be interested in medical school". Coming in with tunnelvision can close more doors than it opens.

I agree with the chances VANDEMORY provided, though I would also like to know your scores on the other AP exams (not just the one you claimed you got a 3 on). How did chemistry go? Since you claim an interest in STEM, releasing that score could help if it is good. Also, knowing the grades in the dual credit courses (if taken at a college is useful). The schools will want to see As and Bs (and note that these often will not be taken seriously if they go towards HS credit and with things like biology, it depends on the one you took. If it was the one taken by most pre-meds at the school, then they will take your grade in the course very seriously. If it was the biology for non-majors, they may essentially overlook the fact that you took it and may frown upon anything lower than B/B+) because these are direct measurements of how you will perform in college.
