Emory ED1/ED2 Class of 2022

@enenalal
As you can see from a few posts below yours that, ED2 is a more difficult round. I would say High Match/Low Reach because of your high stats but I’m still not sure. Emory has a new Admissions dean this year so I would expect some changes.

Also for he rest of you, lurk the Cornell ED1 class of 22 page. The rejections will surprise you. A good way to tapper expectations.

@VANDEMORY1342 aha, thank you!
do you think I have a good chance for Vanderbilt ED2 also? I’m actually torn between the two schools so…

I’m so nervous

Same !!! The next day and a half is going to feel like an eternity

@VANDEMORY1342, Latting was hired in 2011. I thought he was the head of admissions.

I meant Vice Provost for enrollment. I would still expect changes.

@enenalal
Would be more difficult.

@time123 Here is a link to Emory’s website which described this period last year. Nobody other than Admissions can give you any straight up answers and theirs is the only Chance that matters.

@VANDEMORY1342 and @ljberkow : Expect nothing. It may just be different and still hard to predict (and that person just got here and enrollment management means much more than admissions. It intersects with a lot of things, including those things that may effect retention of current students) They are likely looking to enhance yield which will have little to do with the incoming statistics. They may be more picky on other characteristics looking to fulfill needs in ECAS. The biggest change to admissions, which is perhaps more applicable to RD is faculty involvement for some applications.

The document I found suggested that it was for those many applicants that are definitely liked, but may be borderline. Those who can fulfill a departmental need/have a talent in an area are more likely to get tipped over if the adcoms are on the fence. Apparently this started last cycle where some faculty got to read some applications. It would actually be interesting if some of the more “pointed” applications were taken and passed to a relevant department so that the adcoms could basically ask: “Could y’all use someone like this, or can you offer a person with these talents something unique from other places that may admit them”? Faculty involvement is a very good idea in my opinion.

Please chance DD for ED2. She is applying as a Creative Writing Major.

Barnard (RD)
Brown (RD)
Fordham (EA)
Kenyon (RD)
Johns Hopkins (ED)
Oberlin (RD)
Reed (RD)
Stanford (RD) (Legacy)
University of Virginia (RD)

General Comments: DD is pretty pointy (in English straight A’s and A+ in AP Creative Writing). She has challenged herself and has taken AP science all through 11th and 12th grade. Math is her week spot but lowest grade has been a B in A2. Grades are on a huge upward trend. Fall Senior Trimester 3.98 UW 4.52 W

She is an exceptionally talented writer but not the type of kid who believes in herself. I finally got her to submit to some contests. I anticipate at least a Silver Key in the Scholastics. She will be submitting a supplementary creative writing portfolio along with her applications.

Thanks for the input!

I submitted my ED application on October 29th. The day before that, my college counselor subtly told me that ED applications were up already by roughly 10%. I attend a private school in the south that has a good relationship with the Emory admissions staff, so my admissions counselor is a credible source. I imagine that the percentage change from last year increased even more between Oct 28th and Nov 1st because that is when most ED applications were submitted.

Don’t let the numbers get in your head. Emory is on an upward trend, which, if anything, is for the best. I have faith that everything will work out for all of us. Good luck everyone!

@dreamcatcher3
LOL, did you daughter not like Stanford? why did she not apply early there, especially since she’s legacy?
Also I’m excited to see more creative writing majors, Emory is truly exceptional in this area.
And Low Reach
Barnard (RD)- High Match
Brown (RD)- Reach
Fordham (EA)- safety
Kenyon (RD)- match
Johns Hopkins (ED)- Reach
Oberlin (RD)- High Match
Reed (RD)- High Match
Stanford (RD) (Legacy)- Reach
University of Virginia (RD)- High Match

Is it a bad sign that I emailed my admissions counselor a couple weeks ago and he didn’t get back to me? Maybe he is just busy?

@VANDEMORY1342

LOL to you too! Stanford is notorious for their ED rejects :slight_smile: Most legacy people that we know kid’s end up applying RD. Plus she wants a dedicated Writing Major. She finds out about her Hopkins ED on Friday.

@VANDEMORY1342

Thanks for your response. Do you have any insights on being “pointy”?

@badnboujee : Uhm, you mean ED applications at elites are generally increasing. How could anyone know how Emory’s ED1 round did already. Are there admissions liasons communicating with your school about that information. I feel they shouldn’t, but I guess if it helps folks be realistic…okay. I have this feeling that Emory’s ED1 round will eventually look more like ED2 and RD percent admit wise.

@dreamcatcher3 : That is a term I typically use. Honestly, Emory seems not to have a problem with it. There are some schools that clearly care to more so get those who have done and are pretty good at everything, but Emory is a place that seems to take in a fair share of students who are extremely strong in very particular areas that show up over and over again in the application. They would expect a really good essay that validates that she is good at writing. But Emory likes recruiting for the English and Creative Writing Program and it appears so strong that even some internationals know about it and will attend for it. I wouldn’t worry about it. It may actually help her at Emory. Some schools in this tier would just ask “well what else does she do?”, but Emory has a good enough track record with those types of applicants, especially those interested in that program, that I doubt the “pointyness” would draw any pause.

@VANDEMORY1342 My gpa is average for emory (maybe slightly below) but I have had big increases between each year. Does emory take this into account when making decisions?
