EMORY, Rice, USC, Duke, Princeton, etc... Chances?

I'd really appreciate some feedback on my application stats and college choices... Right now, my #1 choice is Emory (hopefully with Emory Scholars, as I don't qualify for financial aid and my parents are giving me next to nothing), and I am also considering Rice, Duke, Princeton, Brown, BC, USC, Barnard, and UIllinois. Help?

Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian/White
School: #1 in state (public school)
Class Rank: Not ranked

UW GPA: 3.9
W GPA 4.9
Major: History, Film

Freshman year: Honors IMP 3 (Trig), Honors American Literature, Honors Chemistry, Honors World Studies (World History/World Issues), Honors Art 1, Honors Chinese 1, P.E.

Sophomore: Honors IMP 4 (Pre-calc), Honors British Literature, AP Biology (5 on AP Exam), AP US History (5), Honors Orchestra, Honors Chinese 2, P.E.

Junior: AP AB Calc (3), AP Lang & Comp (4), AP Chemistry (3), AP US Gov & Politics (5), Honors Orchestra, Honors Chinese 3, Honors Computer Science

Senior year schedule: AP Stats, AP Literature, AP Physics (barf), AP Microeconomics, AP European History, AP Chinese/Chinese 4, Senior Lifetime Activites (P.E. class)

ACT: 33, retook. But fine with that score overall

SAT: not taking...
SAT 2: 750 US History, 720 Biology. Will take more in fall?

EC: Volleyball (JV Freshman year, Varisty Sophomore-Senior, Captain Junior & Senior season), Soccer (JV Junior year, Captain), Club Volleyball (did it from 8th-Sophomore, but I'm including it because it was a huge time commitment, about 18 hours per week during the season, and when I quit I started soccer for the first time), Model UN (Junior-Senior, President), JSA (Sophomore-Senior, Activism Director Senior year), National Chinese Honor Society (Sophomore-Senior), NHS (inducted Junior year), Ski & Snowboard Club (Junior-Senior, we just went on ski trips, probably not including on app), Pep Club (Freshman-Senior; Sophomore year, Underclassmen Representative; Junior year, Secretary; Senior year, President)

Other: about 150+ service hours, volunteer Junior Counselor (Sophomore), Day Camp Rec Leader (Senior), Pegasus Players Global Voices Program (wrote a play and exchanged with native Chinese students, performed for local Chinese-speaking students), Macalester Junior Book Award (?), raised over $18,000 for children's brain cancer research (through volleyball program, we started organizing fundraisers when I was a sophomore). Also have great teachers writing recs; one's political consulting firm ran Obama's campaign and almost took a job in Washington this year (had his freshman and junior year, great classes), the other I had as a math teacher freshman/sophomore year (junior/senior level classes) and has been my volleyball coach for three years, so knows me very well. No essays yet.

Thanks for chancing me!

Emory - high match
Rice - high match
Duke - high match/low reach
Princeton - reach for everyone (but you have a good shot b/c of good EC’s, GPA, and ACT score)
Brown - low reach
BC - high match
USC - high match

Don’t know Barnard or UIllinois.

You are a solid applicant and are going to get into some good colleges. I think your “raising $18,000 for children’s brain cancer research” should be your extracurricular essay for the common app, since it’s unique and you seem passionate towards it. Good Luck!

Thanks for the response! I just looked at the school’s Common App supplements… Barnard has FOUR supplemental essays… ughhh maybe not applying THERE anymore haha

for u of i, you are in.

To the OP:

I would be surprised if Rice or Emory does not offer you merit money. You have an excellent shot for some of the top scholarships of the Emory Scholars program and you have an equally great shot for some of the merit scholarships at Rice (they automatically consider your for scholarships- no extra app needed). Of course, I can’t guarantee they will offer you merit money because it is a very subjective process, but I think you have a good shot.

Emory was my top choice as well, and I applied for the Emory Scholars program. I was an Emory Scholars Semifinalist. However, Rice gave me more money, and I am very glad I chose Rice over Emory. But that’s just me.

Also look at applying to Duke’s Robertson scholarship program… google it and you can find the app.

Thanks everyone

Yeah, I think you are a solid in for all your schools.

How can you possibly afford all of these schools that give no merit aid if you don’t qualify for need based and your parents don’t plan to pay?

Good question… hopefully I will get some merit aid from BC/USC at least. And my parents have the means to pay for everything, and if it comes down to it they’ll help me. They never got money from their parents, so they’re givin me guff

Emory-High match
Rice-slightly lower match then Emory
Duke-low reach
Princeton-High Reach (as it is for almost everyone)
Brown-low reach
BC-low match
USC-low match
Barnard-don’t know
Uillinois-I think in

You have great ECs and your ACT is right where it should be for top colleges. Your SAT Iis are a little weak and so are your APs, but those things don’t matter as much.

GODD LUCK :)

Emory-High match
Rice-High Match
Duke-low reach
Princeton-Reach(but as said before, everyone’s a reach, but you have a good chance
Brown-low reach
BC-low match
USC- in
Barnard-no idea
Uillinois-in

Emory–easy in
Rice–in
Duke–barely reach
Princeton–high reach (for everyone)
Brown–good chance
BC–safety
USC–safety
Barnard–match-ish
UIllinois–safety

You have excellent numbers, as well as a full schedule. Your essay will matter though, so kill it!

Wow you aren’t the typical Asian at all! Awesome. Your ECs are very involved (and I know sports is a huuge time commitment, so kudos) and your GPA is very solid. Overall, your test scores could be a little higher but it should be enough to get you where you want to go.

In at Emory, Rice, BC, USC, Barnard, and UIllinois

Low reach at Duke and Brown

High reach at Princeton…there are a lot of Asians applying and your stats, while good, don’t jump out immediately.

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/789037-chance-me-scea-yale-other-top-schools-pretty-ish-formatting.html

With the class rigor, and well rounded EC’s you should be in at all of them. Princeton will be quite hard though. And thanks for chancing me !

As stated before, I think you’re in for everything but Princeton(still possible though).

gl with your applications

I definitely think there is too much optimism here. Very few students get full merit scholarships at these schools if they don’t qualify for financial aid.

Definitely not the typical Asian resume, this will be good.

Your only reaches are Princeton and Brown, Brown would definitely be a more likely possibility.

Thanks for the positive AND realistic responses, everyone.

I agree with Damaris, and I am a little unsure about Emory Scholars (I might not even get semifinalist status)/money from schools, and coming from a public high school I know just how easy it is to get $100+ from a school-- if you qualify for aid.

Hopefully I will qualify for SOME merit aid, as it is need blind.

you’ve got a solid resume, extremely well rounded. princeton’s a reach, brown low reach/in but everywhere else should be a solid acceptance.

good luck, thanks for the chance.

nice going on that 18k! impressive.
