I just called Emory’s admission office and they said that this is the first year that they are giving out early admisisons to RD students, even if they were not chosen as a scholar. They also said that the early admission (to RD applicants) was going out to “a small percentage” of students who had applied to Oxford or to Oxford and Emory, but not to students who applied only to Emory.
However, now that I read @caspiancat post, it is clear that Emory only RD applicants (not scholars) can get an early admission too! It is frustrating that sometimes the admission office staff don’t always give out the correct facts…
@Mom6
I double checked with my daughter that she had not applied to Oxford as well and she stated that she did not. Her RD acceptance was for Emory only. We were totally surprised as it was unexpected. Probably won’t be able to attend without merit aid though.
So as I understand it only a select few RD applicants got an early acceptance? That gives me some comfort at least. Still extremely nervous for February 15th!
@Stefon
What’s happening in February 15?
@Mom6
Lol they lie sometimes, other schools do the same. They know info spreads quickly, so not to keep the admissions process too transparent they fib a little.
@Stefon
You should so a chance post in the ED1/ED2 thread. It’s pinned in the Emory forum.
@Volunteerism ED2 decisions are released at 6PM.
Thanks
@VANDEMORY1342 Yeah I considered it but at this point I’ve already applied and only have 6 days left of waiting and I’m afraid I won’t like the answer I get. Sometimes ignorance is bliss I guess.
It’s peculiar that they’re handing out early acceptances to Oxford only and Oxford+Emory applicants but not to Emory only applicants
@MiCh408 That is what the admissions office said, but clearly it isn’t true because Caspiancat’s daughter only applied to Emory RD and got an early acceptance. However, if it makes you feel any better, my DS is also a NMSF, SAT1580, GPA UW 4.0, over 9+ APs with 5’s in all of the AP tests, SAT subject tests over 770, great ECs, founder of non-profit, national awards, but no early admission and no scholarship. Applied to Emory only. DS was on the fence about Emory because of its size, but would consider attending with a scholarship. Maybe they could sense that? Not sure… It all works out in the end. Hang in there…
@Mom6 : Is she looking for larger or LAC size? Either way, they could likely kind of sense fit or at least try to. Also…just too many people applied unfortunately. When you have 10.5k applicants, there are likely a lot of similar applicants who they would like to choose, but they cannot fund that many. Plus, again, they look for much deeper than perfect on paper (likely read admissions essays to look for sparky characteristics). Without seeing essays and the specifics of people’s awards and ECs, it is hard to see much patterns than “at least somewhat above average for a normal admit”). The only pattern I see is that they seem to like really accelerated students so not only those with high scores on SAT/SAT2, and tons of APs, but those who did research, or went far beyond their HS’s offerings in something, the big/visible national competitions like Seimens/Intel, and in many cases the arts including writing because English/Creative writing is a seriously emphasized program. Emory gets a surprising amount of these applicants for a private school outside of the top 10. So when they are fortunate to have lots of those plus some super strong well rounded folks, they may begin choosing based upon things that a CC “credentials post” will likely not reveal.
For example, each year they reveal the profiles of several of the Scholars that yielded and oddly enough, none of them looked like applicants that were on CC posting their credentials/asking for a chance. I rarely see people in the Emory CC’s thread come on here and say that they were an Intel Finalist, performed at Carnegie Hall…or teaching themselves abstract math lol. And if you want to be chanced, those are typically things you should probably mention because it reveals a spike. The Scholars process is less predictable than admissions. Your daughter will likely be admitted, I just get the feeling that early admits are probably being considered for either special awards (like debate and music scholarships which don’t lump under Woodruff) or perhaps a liberal arts scholarship.
@Mom6
Maybe you and your DS should discuss withdrawing the Emory app as she won’t get any scholarship money now. I’m not sure what her EFC is however, if she didn’t get in this round( because they didn’t only accept scholars) its a Reach.
@VANDEMORY1342 Not sure where that suggestion to @Mom6 is coming from.
@VANDEMORY1342 : How ridiculous…the application has already been evaluated. It isn’t much of a reach and she will likely be admitted…they may just be iffy about yield so admitted the few that seemed like an ultra obvious fit. Plenty of super obvious, but not as obvious fits will be admitted later What is the matter here? Why are you coming up with these ridiculous ideas of withdrawing applications? Don’t you like the kind of applicant that mom6’s daughter is? This all seems kind of mean spirited and will help no one.
@grandscheme @bernie12
Comprehension is a must you two there was no reason for me to insult her so I’m not sure why you think I did… “would consider attending with a scholarship” is what @Mom6 wrote. This suggests that Emory was a poor fit to begin with as Mom6 and DS needed an financial incentive to either investigate Emory further or have it be in the final running for enrollment.
@Mom6
Maybe what I said earlier was poorly worded. I personally think there is no need to continue the application process for any particular school, if you know the only chance of you attending is if you (or in this case your child) receives merit scholarship money. It is confirmed that your daughter is not getting merit to Emory so, I think it’s safe to say you can withdraw the app.
Does anyone know when scholar finalists or those admitted early will receive their FA awards?
@VANDEMORY1342 : I didn’t say you insulted her…I still don’t understand that type of advice. It isn’t useful and comes off as mean-spirited. That sort of thing is too late to do anyone any good. The application has been completed and submitted. It’s a wrap. They accept lots of students anyway so anyone who Emory thinks is qualified and may fit will be admitted. They do not artificially deflate the admit rate by just taking less students everytime the size of the app. pool increases. It accepts between 4.5-5.5k each year. Someone isn’t going to get in simply because a few applicants “withdraw” their applications. instead of 5000 getting in, then 49something will get in…
I nor you are here to judge who is a fit going off of very little information…people pick top choices for who knows what reasons, and sometimes people do not get in or get lowballed with financial aid and go elsewhere to realize that the other place was the fit. Unless I saw other parts of that applicants’ profile and know their interests, I can’t judge. The only thing we know is that the applicant does not think an Emory sized school is for them, but that is a single criteria. A place can be a fit to a student whether they initially think so or not. Many of us were very naive and somewhat immature as HS seniors regardless of how “accomplished” we were.
@bernie12
Many schools encourage this. Including Emory. UVA said in their admissions update either yesterday or two days ago that if “you or anyone you know” has gotten into their first choice already, and it’s not UVA, to please withdraw the app. This isn’t out of the blue advise I was giving.
