Emory Scholars notification...

i am very anxious for my daughter now that i went on the 2008(2012) thread about the emory scholars semi-finalists from last year. They all had outstanding sat or act! it's almost scary.. not even one person got below 33 act or 2000 sat! wow! so my guess is that they want very high tests scores! what i did not understand it's that they gave this scholarship to high-class people like income over $200.000! why? well my family makes$45.000 and my D made an 31 act and an 2000 sat!! well... what can we do now...we wait and see because i guess the result will come this week(it's what i heard!) good luck!

Scholarships aren't financial aid. It's for high achieving students.
My parents make 40 grand, and I got a 2240.

If you make anything less than 60K, You would definitely get good need based aid.

Emory Scholars is supposed to be completely blind to financial need, and at least for the initial cut-offs, most people tend to have fairly high scores relative to the larger Emory body (you have to keep in mind a 31 ACT is average and a 2000 SAT is below.) After the pool is cut down to just a few hundred, then I think they look at more character based criteria.

And to answer the actual question: last year, most accepted were notified via OPUS sometime in January, although I know at least EDI applicants just got an email like a day later. A physical letter came later. Rejected applicants found out through the mail only.

(As an aside, I'm a Woodruff Scholar so if anybody has any questions about the interview process or Emory in general, feel free to PM me.)

is anyone else as anxious as me? i just can't wait a few more days..... :/

hey guys, i think we're getting our hopes up waiting for decisions to be posted on OPUS- i found this on emory's website. they mention the USPS on several occasions but never mention OPUS or online decisions of any kind:

Early Decision I - Emory Scholars Nominees -

Emory Scholars Nominees who have been admitted under the Early Decision I notification plan will hear news regarding their Emory Scholars status after January 15. Decisions regarding the Emory Scholars semi-finalist round will be mailed to your home address via the U.S. Postal Service.

Selection Timeline

All nominees (both early and regular decision) will learn whether or not they become semifinalists in late January via the U.S. Postal Service. From a pool of approximately 350 semifinalists, Emory will select and notify scholarship finalists in late February. Emory will bring these finalists to campus for interviews which usually take place in late March.

jmw123--you would know right? last year did they have the same thing on their website? or did they actually say it would be on opus?

LaVie:

It's helpful to understand that colleges like Emory offer such scholarships to lure candidates away from Ivy-level schools. Thus, high stats are a requirement. I remember visiting Emory three years ago and when asked, the Adcom admitted that the lowest Scholar test score from the prior year was 1520 (on the old 1600) scale. And, since it is purely a merit scholarship, financial need is not a criteria.

so i don't know why the counselor selected my D if it's just for very smart students? actually she has a 5.6 wgpa and 3.86 ungpa which i consider very good and competitive.. but her tests scores are in the medium range !! and my D never asked for that scholarship, the conselor urged her to do it!! so I thought maybe it has to do with our financial situation which is on the low range!

theresa: I'm thinking they had said it would only be on OPUS last year, but for semifinalists, it was also on OPUS.

It does mention that the process is extremely selective, but Emory Scholars allows counselors to use their discretion when nominating Scholar Nominees.

My guess is that most counselors would select the 4 highest ranked students that are applying to Emory.

Side note: A 5.6 WGPA is the most ridiculous thing I've heard of. Ever.
How does that even work ? o.o

it's a weighted gpa with a ridiculous amount of AP's and here in Florida it's the way they grade gpa weighted!!! some people can have even more!!! and if you read a little more on CC you will find a lot of students with more than 5.6 wgpa!!!! of course the unweighted is on a scale of 4.. and my D have 3.86! .... before saying it's ridiculous do your researches!

lavieenchocolat-you sound likea 12 year old teeny bopper

Hey all,
I called admissions office a while ago and the woman told me the notifications would be MAILED OUT on the 15th.

I hope that helps!

thanks! yes that does help :)

Don't care if every member on CC has one, it's still ridiculous.

awesome! thanks.

i just hope they also release them online...

Paradycia: i'm sorry you don't like it but it's the way it is!!

Ah, how exciting!

I would think they would be released on opus as well, since that has been the case in years past.

So I asked and they said it will be mailed AND posted on opus SOMETIME within the next week.
