Emory student life...is it really as bad as everybody says it is?

Hiiiii, I am a senior that is trying to make a decision regarding where to go to college in the fall!

I've narrowed my list down to Emory, UVA, Boston College, and Michigan - if you can't tell, I'm planning on being a business major.

When it comes down to it, Emory will give me the most money. I am from a middle class family in Lexington, Kentucky - my mother is a professor at UK and my father owns his own little business. We aren't loaded, but we have a nice house and such. Need-based wise, I only get $5000 a year - on student loans; so, no help there. Merit-wise, Emory will give me 2/3 tuition, as a semi-finalist for Emory Scholars, which is extremely helpful. However, my parents have said that they are ready to pay any amount of tuition for whichever school I want to go to. BC has offered the distinction of being in the top 5% of the class and getting to be in the honors program, although I don't know how accredited that is.

Anyways, like I said, I'm leaning towards Emory. But I've been a little afraid to commit because of all the bad things I hear about the school! Some of the trash-talk is from current students I know!

I hear stuff about JAPs, and rich snobs, and the whole school not being what it is made out to be.

I'm not afraid of a drinking campus. By no means am I an alcoholic, but I'm also not the unsocial kid in the corner. I'm not preppy, and I'm not rich. I like to think that I am pretty down to earth and honest. I am fairly conservative - I was born and raised in Kentucky. I am interested in becoming Greek. I have been a leader in my school and in my community, and I would say that I am an extrovert, and I have lots of friends.

Do you guys think that I would do well at Emory? Is it really as preppy and snobby as many people say it is?

I might also want to add that I am Korean-American...however, I grew up without much of a Korean community. Being around Koreans may be a new experience for me - I don't really think I would fit in or understand the culture. I heard there were lots of Koreans at Emory...what would you say?

Thanks! I really hope I get some comments on this thread!

My D is a junior at Emory and has had a fabulous education and social experience. Have you visited yourself? Yes there are some rich kids, there are at many expensive private colleges. My D works, has no car, is from a middle class background and has many friends similarly situated. She has had amazing relationships with her professors and been challenged academically, but given all the help she needs to excel. The social scene at most colleges is what you make of it.

Thank you so much for your opinion! I have visited and I liked it - on both occasions I haven’t gotten to see many of the students because I visited once in the summer before I applied, and once on a Monday morning…haha. But I am starting to agree that the experience will be what I make of it!

Emory sounds like a terrible fit for you.

Why do you say that?

dont worry, i’ll be your friend. then you’ll have a great time

I just got back literally today from a visit to Emory, and I absolutely loved it!!! I am going to enroll there very soon. I had also heard only bad things about Emory, its students, and the social scene. But, when I visited, Emory was nearly perfect! I stayed with a friend of a friend who is currently a sophomore. She had similar interests that I have, such as the OEO (Outdoor Emory Organization) and the track team. She also has a twin sister that is in a sorority. So I really go to experience two completely different views of Emory while I was there. Both girls said that Emory has its share of snobby, petty sorority girls, but they also said, of everyone they know that goes to Emory there is not one person that doesn’t love Emory!!

That being said, I am extremely excited to enroll at Emory. The only negative aspect that I could think of was that it does not have a football team!! So if that is important to you then that may be a pretty big fault.

Hope all goes well and that you chose the right school for you!
