Emory University / Oxford College Class of 2023 Thread

How about we all just let the accepted students enjoy their success for a bit?

@collegemom9 okay, it’s not as if anyone reminded them that at this time next year they will be taking their first set of final exams. Ha! Time flies.

@collegemom9 : Exactly, how would they not? What is there not to enjoy for them? They were accepted to an excellent school and have a 2nd place to call home already. Someone posted the stats, I am just analyzing what it means for future rounds. It may not be pleasant (regardless of what Emory does in early rounds) for later rounds is what the posted data is telling me. If anyone of the currently accepted students is affected by me or anyone discussing the implications for future rounds, then that is on them. Whether we constantly celebrate them on here or not, THEY get to celebrate at home hopefully. They get plenty of positive reinforcement from these darned chance me threads and of course, the acceptance that they got.

Two possible outlooks:

  1. Emory is taking more students ED1 because it's getting more and more qualified applicants.
  2. Emory is taking more students ED1 so that it can take fewer in RD and thereby improve its yield and acceptance rates (the U of Chicago model).

@BiffBrown It could be a combination of both. They also like these ED1s who are really motivated to be at Emory. It makes for a great class if most really want to be there.

The other side of this is how big this class will be. They admitted 50 more ED1, but does that mean more or less than the 1,440 at Emory College this fall, not to mention a huge class by Oxford standards.

Likely both. May not have anything to do with “improving” yield so much as maintaining it but not getting 1450 students.

I agree that they probably don’t want to go over the 1,440 in the current freshmen class, but I can easily see 1,420 to 1,430. They could be surprised again with a higher than expected acceptance rate, which may have been the case last year. The extra 50 now helps, but it’s not an exact science. A good winter blizzard in NY/New England will drive some of them south (ha!).

does anyone if Emory will require a midyear report from the HS for admitted ED applicants?

@sam324 the only thing that Emory will require is the final transcript and official scores if you haven’t sent them. These should be showing up on your portal now.

I know my gpa is on the lower side… it’s mostly from my second year when I got a lot of Bs and a C in AP Euro that I’m scared about. Junior year was also some Bs. Getting into Emory would be an absolute dream for me.

Is there a GC for accepted students?

@emorystan A GC?

Thought I’d give some stats as someone rejected.

Community serivce: volunteered for that non-profit, taught sunday school for 5 years, part of many clubs at my school. Extras: Editor-in-chief of my school newspaper, travel.
Extra info: Had an interview which I thought was really good, many people said my essays were amazing. Application was flagged by alumni association as an alumni referral for acceptance.

Overall, I think it was my GPA which sunk me.

@collegemiam what does “application was flagged by alumni association as an alumni referral for acceptance” mean?

We know people who got a flag. I wouldn’t worry about it, obviously it didnt help.

@collegemiami23 Not worried about it as my child was accepted I’m just wondering what you mean by this? Do you mean you were told that the alumni had recommended that you be accepted? I don’t think interviews carry that kind of weight.

@collegemiami23
I’m sorry to hear that, your stats looked great from my vantage point, Emory can be weird admissions wise, especially if you don’t have a hook as others did. Also being from Flordia, means you are in the most competitive pool for Emory (most likely).
Good luck to you!

@collegemiami23: Can you please explain the GPA of ‘9’? Is that an international scale of some sort? Did you transfer into a school in Miami and are still thinking in that mode?

not an interview. its different

our school uses a 12 point scale and there was no transfering. Its common for private schools. (A+ is a 12, A is an 11, and so on) its an average of each grade per year just like regular gpa just 12 point scale.
