Emory University / Oxford College Class of 2023 Thread

@Carolinasun OPUS is a separate portal that you need to set up. Search your emails, you should have received it shortly after applying. It’s where all your FA info is and then as an admitted student it has links to a lot of other things like Canvas, Email, Housing…

@lesimpson4 go to your profile and click addresses. It’ll be the third one

@emorynavy : It does not matter anywhere near as much as you think. Perhaps only if you don’t have much experience or courses that suggest you have certain skills (actually such students have had trouble getting certain jobs from the most elite universities if they weren’t already wealthy and had social capital associated with that wealth). But most people going to a place like Emory OR Oxford are more ambitious in the first place and will have experience before applying to a job. With exception of only a few areas, the “prestige” effects you see are likely just “input” effects. Gold in, gold out.

Either way, you can research this on your own. It isn’t that hard. Lots has been discussed and studied about this very issue and people have vastly over-stated the effect of these elite universities and their so called “prestige”. The inputs are so different from these schools, that it is really hard to tease out exactly what is effecting the outcomes beyond selectivity, experience, background, and other things not having to do with the school itself.

@Penguina75

The “aggression” was because of this. Even if Oxford was 4 years, the types of students that go there would likely place well regardless of if their final degree said Emory or not. I just find responding to anyone with “oh, but if you go here, which isn’t associated with prestige, you’ll still end up with a degree from here which does”. It is just problematic framing that I feel we should avoid. The primary thing we should get students to consider is how each entity can help them achieve their goals pretending that it happens.

Note that I also get concerned in reference to Oxford simply because that framing does lead to people choosing it with primarily that final Emory degree in mind, when they should likely attend a place that is a better fit for them. A lot of people “suck it up” at Oxford using that very logic and narrative. It makes me uncomfortable to see it presented to a prospective student. It can influence them in unexpected ways. Not as much a problem for those considering ECAS, but for Oxford it is a problem.

Yea i see the “no address defined” under residence hall as well…not too sure this means anything tho. Not trying to get my hopes up

Well we’ll find out in a few hours if anything really matters or not

As far as housing goes, they don’t randomly assign housing.

At admitted students days, you’ll attend a housing session and they will explain next steps which include a questionnaire and roommate selection. There probably already are Facebook groups which many of you are in where you can “meet” your classmates or plan meetups at admitted students days and select your own roommates. They also use the results of the questionnaire on which dorm to place you in. I doubt anyone gets assigned any dorm now and, other than ED admits, they have no idea who is even in the Class of 2023.

I wasn’t saying the housing was assigned. I just didn’t remember there being a space for it under addresses until the day my son was accepted.

There probably should be separate discussion thread for choosing Emory vs Oxford. Emory does a nice job on the admissions webpage of describing which type of people prefer a particular option.

Seems to me everyone has the “residence hall address”/no address defined situation in their portals. Don’t read into it. Good luck everyone!

@UMDreamer I agree. There’s no way that all these people would have it if it meant something. I most likely just didn’t see it until that day.

@bernie12 Thank you for lecturing me about something that you believe that I did incorrectly and explaining to me why I am wrong. However, rather than aggressively telling people they are wrong, when both of comments are opinions, isn’t a constructive and effective tactic to actually changing someone’s opinion. If you feel so strongly about Oxford being ignored, then you should create an Emory vs Oxford thread as @ljberkow suggested.

@ljberkow where is the info on Emory vs Oxford found?

This is a College forum…not a place to compare the size of your egos. Will you all please stop bickering about nonsense??‍♂️

How did you log in to Opus?

@brock19
There’s no need to, see if you get in first through your applicant portal.

@brock19 I tried for over a month and ended up calling them. The staff in their financial aid office are very helpful.

I don’t think I would even know what username/password to use. hahah

Anyone know how much time after decisions they email financial aid info and mail acceptance letter? I don’t wanna look at my portal because I have a lot of work to do and if I see a rejection I’ll just be distracted. Sounds dumb but ??‍♂️

^ you request one, don’t remember exactly how it works but they send it to you after requesting from the opus website
