Emory v. New England Liberal Arts College

(I also posted a similar iteration of this post on the Hamilton forum).

Hi all,

I have been accepted to both Emory University in Atlanta and Hamilton. I have visited both campuses, spoken to students at both, and although they are completely different schools, I am having a very difficult time deciding where to enroll.

I'm from Cambridge, MA, and so I feel like I "know" Hamilton more, in that I know many people there who have come from my school, and other private schools in the Boston area. In addition (and while prestige doesn't matter), it seems as if Hamilton is more well know in MA. Also, the crew coaches at Hamilton have been courting me fairly heavily and Emory doesn't have a Varsity Rowing program.

On the other hand, Emory is a large research university where the campus seems more diverse, and the educational opportunities are equally impressive.

I should note that I while I don't consider myself super artsy or liberal (and dare I say I may be considered a typical New England "WASP"), I am gay. I have heard that Hamilton had issues in the past few years with homophobic moments. And that's a negative. What's Emory like for LGBT students?

Can anyone help me make my choice by drawing up some pro's and con's (or refuting mine)?

Matt

Dear dx1992, I am in a similar situation like you. Having visited both Hamilton and Emory, I know that these two schools offer great education while providing you a completely different background.

I’d say choose Emory University for its academic standings and research opportunities. Both are great schools.

If you feel that the “prep” environment is what you seek, choose hamilton.
If you want to explore then by all means choose Emory.

Knowing that both schools practice need blind policy, transferring between the two schools shouldn’t be a problem

Emory does have a pretty active crew team. I have friends on the crew team, and they are very serious about crew.
