Emory vs. Georgetown

My daughter is accepted to the 'college' at both, and we'd love some input. She's interested in possible history or economics major... wants to go to law school to become a lawyer.

So...
- academics and preparation for law school
- internships and other opportunities toward law school goal
- social life
- happiness, satisfaction of students
- camaraderie of student body as a whole
- dorms & food

...other thoughts? Thanks for your thoughts!

Congrats on your daughter for entering both. I am a senior and was accepted into Emory and waitlisted into Georgetown and you may no take so much heed to my opinions but I know a little bit about these universities. Well they are both pretty strong academically, Georgetown in international relations and Emory in bussiness but both have excellent liberal arts undergraduate education. I think Georgetown is a bit better in history (I did a summer course there and it was awesome) but I would say both are almost the same in economics, not Ivy league but very good departments. Also I have been told that Emory is pre-professional oriented and a person who graduates there can find jobs that pay well, or can go to graduate school and get accepted in to programs. In internships all I can tell you is that a friend of mine who is in freshman year in Georgetown is working as an intern to the Washington post, so I would say that gtown gives you good internships. Now for the social life, I went to Georgetown in the summer and the neighborhood that Georgetown is in, is full of young people . It is like tha activest part of Washington and the people are nice. The dorms are actually pretty good, not small, the only complaint is that there is only one common room for too much people, but that is in New South Hall you would have to look at the other dorms. The food in the main eating hall kind of sucks but there is a small not expensive restaurant in the northern campus that I really liked (I don’t remember its name), and always ate there. I have not visited Emory so I can’t give you any info there, but I am going to visit soon. I think your daughter has to visit both places and feel in which onwe she best fits, because they are equal academically. Georgetown may have more name and reputation but Emory is always improving and who knows where it will be in four years,

Good luck.

^ Emory # 18 ranked in the nation and Georgetown #23

^^ like anyone on CC cares about rankings, LOL…

just came from visiting Dc and Georgetown…it’s like comparing apples and oranges to Emory…

Emory: suburban campus; transportation needed to reach Atlanta or Decatur

Georgetown: everything at your fingertips, bustling, etc…

Georgetown. The area is better, more fun, similar type of student. Much more to do, and I would say better networking advantages.

The purpose of rankings is to dispute the claim that Gtown is perceived by others as more prestigious and reputable. In fact, Emory has greater prestige in some departments, and Georgetown in others. However in terms of an overall academic strength, I would say Emory wins.

However, Gtown is gorgeous in my opinion. The campus life is really nice - I lived near Emory for a few years before my family moved - Emory Village gets old fast.

The networking all depends on your field. Emory will connect you up with fabulous business and med opportunities. I know less about GTown’s networking, but if youre talking about getting connections while your in school with people who can help you out with grad school and career, I would say they both have plentiful opportunities that require proactivity.

Emory wins it’s only 10 min car ride to dtown atl. Beautiful campus that is always growing, top southern school. Nice weather, there’s more than emory village unless your socially inept

For prelaw it doesn’t matter since law schools are all about gpa+lsat. Thus, she should go where she will enjoy her four years and thus, perhaps do the best academically.

Specifics: location is huge. While GU has a walled off campus, it’s urbane, whereas Emory is more suburban. Academics would be strong at both colleges, but the bio sciences probably win at Emory; GU is known more for IR, language program & Law School. Food at GU is not reported to be great. And, according to our tour guide, most kids “go out” Friday nights and on weekends to eat. Thus, GU could be expensive if going off the food plan. Moreover, its also awkward for kids on finaid since they can’t afford to go off campus do dine, so they have to stay back while their friends go out. GU has a little more school spirit with D1 sports. With it’s endowment, I’m guessing research opportunities are a little more plentiful at Emory, but that’s just a guess.

first of all, congratulations on acceptances to both, that’s incredible! that being said, i live in the washington, dc area and know about a million people who go to georgetown and are able to intern on capital hill. both my parents went to georgetown law, and it is in one of the best areas for extra-curricular opportunities in the law or political science field. it is also more selective than emory and more prestigious. This might be influenced by the fact that i live close by, but i’m relatively positive that georgetown is much more prestigious than emory and is regarded one of the best schools for the law and political science paths.

Georgetown Law trumps Emory Law. If your daughter goes to Georgetown and gets a 3.8 by the time she’s a junior, she can get "admitted early " into Georgetown Law Center which guarantees her a spot at the law school (a top-14 law school) and she wouldn’t have to take the LSATs. Emory’s ranking at No. 18 and Georgetown’s at No. 23 makes no difference, a prestige from Georgetown will be better known across the U.S and the world (esp. Europe and Latin America). Let your daughter go to Georgetown!

Georgetown in a heartbeat.
