Emory vs. UGA Honors

I just got off Emory's wait list, so I have to choose between Emory and UGA (where I'm in the honors program).

emory is horribly overrated unless you are going for premed

Are you instate in Georgia? If so, what would the cost difference be and would you and your family feel that it was worth the cost difference to go to Emory?

And to the poster above me, Emory has many strong programs for undergrads outside of premed. A top 10 undergrad business school is the only one that pops to mind, but I assure you Emory is a very strong school with many stellar programs.

It depends on how much more Emory will cost and what you are looking for in terms of social scene.

Last I checked Hope won't cover much if anything at Emory. Plus it's an overrated school that is just all around crap socially too. I'd go have a good four years at UGA.

What do you guys mean by "overrated" school? I'm taking these insults with a pinch of salt..

And if we were to hypothetically take money out of the question (UGA is free, I'm still waiting for Emory's finaid), which one would be better?

Emory is arguably a "better" school than UGA Honors. But with Honors, your opportunities are probably not gonna be limited.

I just can't personally stand Emory's social scene/general feel.
If both schools were free, i'll go to Emory. If UGA honors as free and Emory cost money, then i'll stick with UGA.

Sorry for all the questions, but what is Emory general feel and social scene?

I've had more fun playing Bingo at Sea Island with grandparents.

I guess the importance of social scene doesn't matter to me much. I don't drink/do drugs/go bar hopping, so in retrospect it's not a factor of which school I'd pick.

usnews rates emory's bschool #12 so its not top 10. busweek is a joke, student surveys? haha.

That sounds like Emory, but until you get your financial aid package, you really won't know what the best option is. For instance, I think my financial aid package from Emory was $8,000 worse per year than the school I liked better.

You're talking about two completely different social scenes, college town vs. major city. I went to Emory, and visited Athens/UGA a couple of times each school year. My impressions were:

UGA: Football tailgates are amazing (it's the SEC!!). Bigger Greek system means bigger, really elaborate frat parties and events. (Now, the parties I went to were some of the bigger events of the year. YMMV.) The bar scene in Athens seems cool and pretty laid-back. Most things revolve around UGA.

Emory: No football. I think the campus parties are less.. giant, for lack of a better word. There are plenty of school-sponsored and club-related activities if the party scene really isn't your thing. Once you leave campus, Atlanta has a much bigger variety of things to do than Athens, from more upscale clubs to theater/symphony to restaurants. But as a freshman that can be hard to swing until you befriend upperclassmen with cars.

Compare the financial packages. If you plan on med school, law school, or any graduate program that doesn't have tuition stipends, you'll probably want to go for the cheaper option if all other things are equal. If you work hard and take full advantages of the Honors opportunities at UGA you'll do very well.

gkc4: and you didn't PM me???? Congratulations!!! I told you so!!!

I would take a really hard look at what the Honors program at UGA entails. Yes, we are from Ga, yes my daughter got into honors and we have talked to many people who are in the programs. The benefits are great if you are going to UGA anyway, not so great compared to Emory. The HOPE scholarshop will pay $4,000 per year for a private school, the rest will be up to Emory. How important is money in the decision? How important is size?

ThatMom: Well, that's the thing. People tell me UGA Honors is more or less equivalent to Emory, in terms of the attention you get and the resources you have. But I don't know if this is actually true...

bump......
