Is there any possibility in working or volunteering as an EMT at UMiami or around Coral Gables? I noticed they don't have an EMS corps like other colleges and was just wondering.

We have CERT, the Canes Emergency Response Team, for on campus services of the like. And, we’re actually getting an EMT program up and running right now.

Below is the information I received in an e-mail:

For the first time in the UMs history, students will have the opportunity to sign up for an on-campus EMT Training Program. The program will consist of weekend training sessions for approximately 3 months. During this time, top paramedics and firefighters from the greater Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys will be instructing the course, which will allow you to acquire hands on medical training in classrooms, clinical labs, emergency rooms, ambulances, and Miami-Dade and the Keys Fire Rescue Departments.

Space in the program is extremely limited and is only available to students enrolled at the University of Miami. For this reason, applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis and then based on their commitment to the training.

Information sessions will be held in LC 140 on Thursday, April 7th from 5:00-6:15 p.m. and Friday, April 8th from 3:30-4:45 p.m. The first 100 students who attend the information sessions will be seriously considered for the program. Please email your name, anticipated date of graduation, and an approximately 250 word essay on why you want to be part of the program to UMEMTCONTACT@gmail.com.

N.B.: The program is open to ALL undergraduates, graduating seniors and post-baccalaureates.
