I’m at a competitive, wealthy public high school. We rank (I think), but ranks aren’t released until senior year, when everyone is applying to college - at least, that’s what my study hall teacher told me.

But since we don’t weight GPA, some kids who’ve taken all AP’s get screwed over in favor of kids who took all easy classes. =/ Hopefully, colleges take this into account.

I just read somewhere that about 45% of schools no longer rank. The general consensus of my Google search was that the decision seems to be fueled by the USNWR and common data set (# of admitted students in top 10% of high school class) category. The statistical difference between a top 10% and top 15% kid is miniscule while the negative effect of being # 15 can be huge. In other words, if your school doesn’t rank then a college can accept an 11% kid without messing up their statistics.

@Kajon: I followed the link, read through the website, and now I can’t stop laughing. If THAT is what people at MIT are like, then I have a new first choice… xD

My school “doesn’t rank” but they do top 20 (although you only know val, sal and then IF you are in the top 20 but not what number). However, they do keep track of people’s ranks even though they’re not “supposed” to release them so if you nag your GC enough you can find out what number you are :P. I’m not really sure if ranks are included on college apps or not. I don’t think they are but if your rank will really help you they may mention it in their rec.

my school doesn’t have class rank, but we do have a vali and sali.

It kinda makes it a lot harder because we have tons of competitive people… and only 2 people know where they stand, and the others kinda scramble blindly… :/

My high school ranks because our school isn’t good enough where top 10% or even like 8% means you are that good (class of 400ish.) The quality of students in the top 15 or so is about the same as top magnets, so I think that ranking at average schools works to the advantage of the students.

My school ranks but there is HEAVY GRADE INFLATION! Many of the kids with 4.0s received ACT scores bellow 28. I can name at least 5 students with 3.9-4.0 that got between 21-24 on the ACT!

You claimed that what I said was false because many high schools rank, so I made sure to emphasize the distinction between any high school and a top high school.
I’m pretty sure everyone is chill. The subject of whether or not a school ranks isn’t exactly a heated topic.
Once again, everyone on this thread is pretty chill and attempting to help the OP. In fact, you are the only one mentioning a “fight” or going “crazy”.

I don’t know how to quote like you, but let me explain.
I briefly stated to help out the OP.

I don’t really care, actually. I agree with you that this is not a heated topic.
Thanks for helping the OP, but I hope you change your attitude.
Just because this forum is anonymous does not grant you the rights to be disrespectful to many posters.

Also, you decided to merely glance over what I said.
I specifically listed the posters who go to a ranking school.
Notice how you only used parts of my post to argue.
Your word choice, “My claim” already shows your arrogance in handling this issue.
