Hi everyone,
I just did a private audition for NYU in San Francisco and thought it went well. I’ve been acting almost my entire life and have gotten positive feedback from my teachers (whatever that really means!). I practiced hard on my monologues, worked at least a month on each. The head of acting told us briefly how the process was going to work for the audition–we would do our pieces and then we might be asked to do more pieces for an “end of the hour callback”. He said not getting a callback didn’t necessarily exclude us from consideration for the much more important callback in New York.
Well, didn’t get one! And honestly, looking at the people who did I was like, well. I knew one of the girls personally, and she was really good. Didn’t know much about the other people. Then, seeing the other people who didn’t get an end of the hour callback I couldn’t help but notice some kind of commonality. I can’t specify what.
Anyways, I’m really eager to hear from people who know about NYU’s audition process and whether I should just dash my hopes at this point and push it under the rug.
I have never heard of Tisch doing callbacks in their audition process. Not sure what you mean by “the much more important callback in New York”?
They have end of hour callbacks for their MFA Acting program as well as a final callback weekend in New York. They don’t do callbacks for their undergrad programs.
From what I understand, if you don’t get an end of hour callback at NYU Tisch, it is very unlikely that you are still being considered. I’m sorry. These top MFA Acting programs are extremely competitive with over 1,000 applicants and only 8-16 spots per program. It’s pretty much a crap shoot no matter how much you prepare. It is very common for students to apply two or three years in a row before being accepted.
It means that you are almost definitely in, that there is hardly any question, or out of consideration. Those called back, are definitley still in consideration, those auditioning simply wanted to just see a little more, fine tune the decision where there might be a doubt on what rating to give on an issue.
Operacabra, I am aware of the process for the grad program but the OP didn’t indicate that he/she was inquiring about that. Especially with the reference to “teachers”, it isn’t obvious that this individual already has a degree.
