ENG 100 Closed?

So, DS is going to orientation next week, and he is trying to pick out some courses for Fall. It looks like most sections of ENG 100 are closed. Are they really closed, or is advising holding seats which are released each registration session?

they open some seats every day so everyone gets into classes

Do they open seats in all sections?

They should open seats in all sections, but they only open 2 at a time, so if 2 people at her orientation want it, she should be prepared to pick another section.

yes but make sure your son race to the engineering career center that morning before everyone else if he wants a certain class…they only open a few seats in each section…just enough for everyone…but not enough for everyone to join their desired sections

I only know how orientation works at another u so please forgive all the questions. So, at UMich, students at orientation aren’t given a specific time to register? It’s a free-for-all the morning of registration? Which day does registration take place, i.e. first day, second day, third day?

DS has three sections picked out that he is excited about taking. He is really worried about some of the other sections because he really isn’t interested in those areas (AT ALL).

Does the computer block out conflicting classes? For example, once he registers for his ENG 100 class, does he simply put in the next course number he wants, and the computer shows him which sections are available to him which won’t conflict with his ENG 100 class? And as he adds each class number the computer shows him only sections which don’t conflict with his growing schedule?

Final Question: He was accepted into UROP, but has since found out how time consuming it is. Should he drop UROP? He wants to do research, but maybe not until another semester or even over the summer. Will he be black-balled by UROP if he opts out of it?

It’s a free-for-all…but it’s a fun free-for-all since no one is actually mean about it. The order also depends on your advisor, for example someone 5th in line might actually be first based off which advisor they saw yesterday.

Process for Registering:

 • Student Advisors talk about what you need to register for and the differences between classes
 • Academic Advisors make sure you are picking classes that are right for you.
 • That evening, you would backpack all the classes that you want and a few extra and make sure it doesn’t conflict with other classes.
 • The morning of the third day, the advisor just double-checks your selection.
 • Then you go to a computer lab and finally register, hopefully, you don’t need to change classes around. Most likely, you would not get the first choice of lab times, but you should get your first or second choices of ENGR 100 class.

I don’t know much about UROP, however, I know you can’t join midyear and you can’t get out of it midyear.

LOL, what do you mean “you can’t get out of it midyear”? What do you expect them to do if you stop showing up?

You get credit for doing UROP, so you would fail…

colmomto2, if she can’t get into any of the Engin 100 sections she wants, she can sign up for Engin 101/151 first semester and take 100 next semester (that’s what I’m doing).

A couple of the sections are the same from 1st to 2nd semester, but most are new each semester. Maybe she’ll find one she likes even better there.

Yeah, DS has already thought of that and did manage to find one section of ENG 100 he’s interested in second term. I think the section he is gunning for only shows up in fall.

So, just to confirm, he does need to work out course times on his own because UMich doesn’t have a registration computer program that eliminates conflicts?

When you actually register for a course, the system will tell you if there is a time conflict, but you will have to check on your own while backpacking.

Okay, what is backpacking?

Backpacking is similar to putting items in a shopping cart in online stores. You can chose to buy them at a later time, but you have quick access to them at that time.

Don’t worry about your son, Wolverine Access and the Advisors are pretty much fool-proof, they can handle anything that gets thrown at them.

Yeah, I know DS will be fine. He’s a smart kid. Afterall, he got into UMich. Thanks, guys, for answering my questions.

Can you put courses in your backpack before you get to campus for orientation?

You can, but the classes you picked will most likely be closed by the time you get to orientation, and then you will have to refigure your schedule. I recommend just waiting.

I backpacked my courses before my orientation and got into most of them. It sped up the whole process for me because I was already very familiar with the course offerings and what interested me.
