Engineer Courseload?

Hey, I'm preparing to transfer to UMCP to pursue an electrical engineer degree. I was just wondering what the typical course load would be for this major. When I was taking my gen eds at community college, I must admit taking calculus II along with Physics was kinda rough so I'm kind of concerned how I'm going to handle multiple engineer courses at once. So, how many courses did you guys take and was it a mix of gen eds and engineer courses or pure engineer courses?

Thanks guys!

anyones???

While I’m not an engineer, my son is a freshman engineer at UMCP…great decision, you will love it there and be very happy!

The recommended course load ranges between 14-18 per semester, with most around 15-16 credits. Here is the 4-year plan that lays everything out for you to show you how to fit everything in http://www.eng.umd.edu/sites/default/files/images/current/forms/4yrplan/2012-2013/enee-4yr-acadplan-2012.pdf</a>
It’s not set in stone, but it helps to give you a sense of what you need to do. First off, don’t worry about having a rough semester doing Calc2 and physics. Calc2 is rough by itself from what I have heard - the rumor is that is much tougher than Calc3. My son took 16 credits of all STEM/engineering classes and did very well because that was what interested him. Now he’s taking a semester with gen eds thrown in and is fine also.

I personally thought calc 2 was a lot easier than physics 2 (electricity and magnetism). I am a Mechanical Engineering major and the workload definitely isn’t light, but it doesn’t mean you cant do it. I only took 12 credits this semester but still found myself in the library at least 4-5 hours a day. Next semester I will have to up that probably around 8 hours a day, but its all hard work you will forget about. Any time you hear that kids failed out, it is mostly because they didnt do anything. As the classes you will be taking definitely by no means will be easy, you will adapt yourself to study enough for them where you will do fine.

Usually engineering students take around 4 fundamental classes a term. Just saying.
