Engineering Admit Weekend vs. Reily Scholar

I was selected to be a Notre Dame Scholar, which I believe is top 20%.

I never received a letter for Reilly Scholar, but today I received a letter saying that ND would pay to send me to an engineering weekend, in early february.

So...is reilly only for non-engineers and this one only for engineers? Or no.

Did anyone else get this and did anyone get asked to both?

I got the engineering weekend thing today, too. I, however, was not an ND Scholar or any other distinction. Don't mean to bring you down, but I don't think the engineering open house is really that exclusive. From what I could tell from the invitation, it was sent to all EA admitted students that marked engineering as their intended major.

Wow...so they pay for all engineering admits to come visit- that must be a lot of money. But I was just curious...I don't care about the honor or anything.

Well, looking at CollegeBoard's statistics, 8% of students major in engineering at Notre Dame. So we'll accept that about 1000 kids were accepted EA, right? We'll keep the 8% to balance the undecided kids and the kids who intend to major in engineering but will eventually drop it. Anyways, that brings you to about 80 kids. Yes, that's quite a few people to transport to Notre Dame. How many are actually going to go, though? I know I'm not. (My high school plays our last regular season basketball game against our cross-town rivals that friday, and I am not going to miss that as a senior.) When you get down to it, it's probably only a few dozen kids that will actually go.

If someone who actually went in previous years can comment, feel free to correct me. I'm only making an educated guess.

Reilly scholars can be engineering majors--at least that's the way it was in March of '06 when son attended the Reilly weekend. And yes, he is still an engineering major and had even attended the intro to eng program for pre-college at Notre Dame the summer before his senior year of HS. Now, things may have changed since almost 2 years ago, but, it has been our understanding that Reilly Scholars are the very top of the EA admits regardless of intended major. Congrats to you and we hope that you will hang in there for engineering as the world definately needs more engineers!!!

Reilly is the top 5% of all EA admits, regardless of major. It's how they try to draw in the kids who are looking at Ivies and other top schools.

I haven't heard about the engineering weekend at all...but then I applied to Arts and Letters.

I got the invitation for the engineering weekend but I never saw anything in the letter indicating that they would pay for me to go. Is that just for the top admitted intended engineering majors? Did it specifically say in your letter that they would pay for it?

Yes...it specifically stated that the university would pay for my plane ticket and accommodations.

It said something about being one of the top admitted engineers, but it was kinda in the middle of the letter, so it seemed like the fact that they were paying for me wasn't that big of a deal. That is why I was confused.

Do you know what criteria they used to determine this? Like what kind of scores or grades did you have?

If they're willing to pay, it might have something to do with your distance from ND. I'm only like 2.5 hours away driving, so I doubt they're going to put up any money for that.

they are paying for me to go, SAT scores = 1550/2310

just got the letter today, they are offering to pay for my expenses as well(SAT 1600/2390)

yeah in the packet I got two letters; both of them mentioned the engineering weekend but only the second one had that paragraph mentioning that expenses would be covered. The second letter also mentioned that I would be invited to an Engineering Honors introduction on the second day of the visit? Did your letters mention this too?

same here tennisgirl

yep...that's the letter I got too. I registered for the open house, and a few days latter I got my plane tickets confirmed by the University.

Are you guys planning on going also?

I registered to attend and bought the plane ticket. I was planning on going to the Marquette basketball game that Saturday. I tried to buy just a single ticket off of Stubhub, but you can't buy less than two. I guess I will just be sitting around Saturday afternoon and evening unless I can find a single ticket without breaking the bank.
