engineering and social life at UCLA

I've heard that is difficult or nearly impossible to maintain a social life at UCLA while in the Engineering school. I was wondering if this is true or if anyone has any personal experience with this? Would I have a better overall experience at a school like UT Austin (cockrell) usc (viterbi) or Michigan(CoE)?

The people in Engineering without social lives probably wouldn’t have social lives regardless of their major.

College life is what you make it. If your major is very demanding, it’s possible that you may have to study more, but you can have a social life if you choose to.

Agree with alicantekid lol. I know plenty of engineering students who are involved in Greek life, clubs, student gov,etc and have good social lives even as upperclassmen.

Yeah that’s a good point. I was more worried about the location on campus and whether or not it was somewhat isolated from the rest of the students. do engineering students have designated dorms and Res halls or can you room wherever you want?

Have same question re engineering housing - I guess you can indicate major on profile, do they group engineers together, or is there certain known engineering dorms/plazas etc?

No the dorms don’t group students together based on major at all. You obviously will have more classes with engineering students but engineers aren’t at all isolated from the rest of campus. You live in dorms with students from all different majors. Unless of course you choose to room with people who are engineers, but otherwise first years are assigned pretty randomly.

i completely understand where you’re coming from. im a first year bioengineer here and my biggest concern was that i wouldnt have a social life as an engineer. but after 2 quarters here i have all the social life that i could ask for. i honestly believe that having a social life or not depends on the person. if you really want a social life then youll find it here at ucla. yeah, being an engineer is time consuming, but that doesnt mean that you have to choose one or the other
