Does ND have a good engineering school? I am looking to apply here as well as other places but was not sure of the quality of the engineering program (which is what I want to do). Anyone know anything?

If you want to go by the US News and World Report rankings, ND engineering is not as good as the premier large state schools. For engineering, those rankings are purely subjective and qualitative as they survey Deans at other universities. It will be hard for you to get a good answer to this question. What do you mean by “good engineering school”. ND is an elite school. I’m sure their engineering depts are “good”.

All measures of “good” are subjective. From a practical standpoint, look at the firms that hire ND grads, the average starting salaries (subjective, but firms will generally pay in-demand grads higher salaries,) and the percentage of grads that had job offers within three months of graduation. Most of this info can be found on-line or through the career center at the different schools. Also, look at recruiter rankings of the schools. This is a pragmatic approach that looks at jobs after graduation and no other factors, but engineers are known for being pragmatic! Research and other factors are harder to measure, but you need to look at what YOU want from the program (job, research, etc.)

Engineering at Notre Dame is alright. Really no different from any other good school. I wouldn’t put it in the same league as MIT or Stanford (or even Michigan), but I think I got a pretty solid education. At least in chemical engineering, the courses are very skewed towards theory. This was really helpful to me once I started graduate school.

konzer90,

Did you find that there was a strong corporate presence at recruiting fairs. Right now, the ability to find internships seems to be the most important factor. The quality of the ND students is not in question. However, are there enough engineering students to drawn the recruiters.

[Mechanical Engineering // Career Center // University of Notre Dame](http://careercenter.nd.edu/about-us/career-and-internship-data/future-plans-data/mechanical-engineering/)
This is an example of the data available from the Career Center at the school. It lists post-graduation plans of grads in various disciplines, salaries, and companies for which they have gone to work. It may help answer some of your questions. The above link is for Mechanical Engineers, but other engineering majors are listed, as well.

Each year a number of undergraduates in engineering receive job offers from financial firms. What are details? I do know this happens for the Chemical Engineering students.

I graduated from ND engineering in 2006, so it could be different now, but back then there were plenty of recruiters at our job fairs for engineers. Almost everyone in my class had at least internships to go to every summer. Also, nearly everyone had either a job or graduate school to go to when we graduated. GE hired a lot of people my year.

How’s civil engineering at ND?
