Hi, I am an international student from India. I have IELTS score 7.5 and scores are the following -
10th - 8 out of 10
11th - about 70% out of 100
12th - predicted 90%+ out of 100
Which university in Canada should I apply to? Money is not a problem. Weather is just a preference.
I was thinking of Alberta, however, I really wanted to apply to UBC… Sadly, the deadline has passed.
I think that you still have time to apply to Simon Fraser University. It is a very good university on the top of a small mountain in Burnaby, which is immediately next to Vancouver and thus not all that far from UBC. As you noted you still have time to apply to U.Alberta. It is a very good university but the winters will be quite cold (don’t be surprised to see -40 degrees).
Other options include the University of Calgary, the University of Victoria (in Victoria BC, mildest winters in Canada) and Dalhousie (in Halifax, Nova Scotia). All are good schools.
Many of these would be a bit less expensive than UBC for an international student, and slightly easier to get into.
You could also spend about an hour to check out the Macleans university listings for engineering, and then checking the application deadlines on each university’s web pages.
Thanks a lot! I did some research and found that these universities meet my criteria for first-year undecided engineering as well as have their deadlines far away -
Western
Alberta
Queens
Ryerson
York
Manitoba
Now, I do have some extra-curricular like TT School Team Captain, Lead guitarist, youtube channel, MUNs, German exchange, science exhibitions, NGOs, etc.
Which universities would you suggest will be good? both in terms of an engineering program as well as my chances of admission. (about >50% chance of admission) I will only be applying to one Canadian university as I am applying to the US as well, and I am keeping Canada just in case I don’t’ regret applying there.
@shivng All of those universities are good. Applications for all Ontario universities are run through OUAC. You can apply to up to 3 Ontario programs for the same amount of money.
I would choose York and Ryerson for you, simply because there will be more international students and more Indian students than at the other universities on your list. Your culture shock would be much less than at other universities. It would also be less expensive and a shorter travel time to get home. Ryerson will also have the best weather - but it can still get very cold in the winter.
Do you have SAT or ACT scores? Although they are not required for Canadian universities, they can be very helpful as it makes it easier to evaluate you against other applicants.
Although these schools might have deadlines that are relatively far away, I would urge you to get your application materials in as soon as possible. The schools have already started sending out acceptances and the longer you wait, the less your chances.
