Engineering co-op when I have Full Time Job?

I'm currently a physics major but am thinking I should be in engineering, as I plan on going to grad school for engineering. That being said, UC has an outstanding co-op program for engineering students, that as far as I know is MANDATORY to complete the degree.

My question is, how can I complete all of the co-ops if I already hold a full time job? My hours are very flexible, ( I manage a very small retail store), and I will be able to handle taking day classes (though it will be a struggle). But to take off for months at a time is another subject altogether.

Does anyone know the flexibility of these co-ops? Are they equivalent to working a Monday-Friday, 9-5 job?

Are students who work for a living just not able to do engineering as a major? Doesn't seem fair...

Um, a year ago your major was English and you were “pre-med”. Now you’re a physics major but thinking of transferring to engineering. You also hold a full-time job?

Just trying to figure this out…
