I am an entering freshman looking to purchase a new laptop for use at USC. I am a biomedical engineering major. I have used a Dell for the last four years of high school and I like it, but it won't last four more years and can't run some of the programs I will probably need.

I found these specs on the UW-Madison Engineering Site:
* 2.0 GHz Pentium Core Duo processor, or equivalent CPU
* 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
* 80 GB Hard Drive
* Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate
* CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive or DVD±RW Drive -->
* Internal Wireless Card (compatible with the IEEE 802.11b/g standard)
* 14 inch (or larger) XGA Display, 1024 x 768 minimum
* Video Card with at least 128 MB memory
* Onboard Gigabit Ethernet
* 3 Yr Parts and Labor Warranty (minimum)

My first question is whether or not Viterbi posts recommended specs for a computer anywhere.

My second question is whether or not USC offers any way to get a student discount (or if there is any way to do that regardless of school)

Question 3: will a computer with the above specs would get me through four years at USC as an engineer?

Hmm… I didn’t get that e-mail. I also haven’t received an e-mail about football tickets… could those things be related to me not having attended orientation yet?

My D got an e-mail about a week or so after orientation regarding the football tickets & the computers and prices available through the USC bookstore. (She’s a freshman entering Verterbi & she decided on a Mac.) If you’re not going to orientation, you might call the school. They’re very helpful…
