I've been accepted to these three schools for the Fall 2013 semester as a Aerospace Engineering (Buffalo), or Mechanical (Stony, Bing) major. I've been having a hard time deciding which school to attend. I want to go to a school with a strong reputation for engineering that will provide me with research opportunities and will allow me to get into a top grad school like UMich, UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA etc. while also providing a strong social atmosphere with much to do. I would like to major in Aerospace but considering Buffalo is the only school to offer it I've included the others on my list. At Buffalo I would most likely be doing a double major in MechE and AeroE. Stony and Buffalo have both offered me $2.5k/yr in scholarships. I'm from Long Island and it would be nice to get away and have a change of scenery, but part of me feels that Stony has been on the rise lately and may become the premier SUNY University in the future. So which school has the best program? The best quality of life? and the most opportunities?

Thanks for your input. I previously came to the same conclusion, however, I felt that I should include it in this thread to see what others have to say about the program and social life compared to the other main SUNY campuses. Although in my mind Binghamton isn’t really a viable option considering the strength of the other SUNY programs.

We are from LI and son did not apply to SB… too close to home and likely not a great fit anyway.

Son is double Mechanical and Aerospace engineering majors and will graduate this May. (3 job offers all obtained from the Fall engineering job fair. You use this for getting internships as well.) Son had on campus research which turned in to paid research opportunities on campus, 2 summer internships and involved on campus.

Flights to Buffalo as available from JKF, LGA and Islip.

(Son got into Binghamton’s Engineering program as well and he loved the school itself, but with further investigating, it got crossed off the list as the engineering dept is not as good as the other schools you list. )

Like crazed’s son my DD wouldn’t apply to SB wanted off LI. She is very happy at Buffalo as a Jr ChemE major/math minor. She is also doing on campus research, has had REUs each summer and Jetblue is great ( with their american express card we get a couple flights free each yr on points).

UB definitely is on top for Mechanical and Aerospace. The dual major is really nice too.

UB will give you the research opportunities you are looking for, if you pursue them. Many of the MAE professors at UB are also very well connected, and I know many grads from UB who ended up going to big schools like you mentioned. I can’t speak to either of the other schools, but UB definitely excels in the areas you’re looking for.

My daughter is interested in biomedical engineering. I understand that Buffalo is higher rated in the USNWR rankings than Binghamton, but its biomedical engineering program isn’t accredited by ABET and Binghamton’s program is. Any thoughts?

For Biomedical Engineering I would recommend Stony Brook. Their Biology program is already the best of the SUNYs and BME is one of their stronger Engineering programs. If the program isn’t ABET accredited that is a huge disadvantage when it comes to the job search and applying to graduate schools. However, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend Binghamton either.

UB isn’t accredited for Biomedical because it’s a newly offered degree, as of 2011 or 2012 I believe. They are seeking accredation during the next cycle.
