SUNY Engineering: Stony Brook, Buffalo, or Binghamton?

Hey CC,

I've been accepted to these three schools for the Fall 2013 semester as a Aerospace Engineering (Buffalo), or Mechanical (Stony, Bing) major. I've been having a hard time deciding which school to attend. I want to go to a school with a strong reputation for engineering that will provide me with research opportunities and will allow me to get into a top grad school like UMich, UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA etc. while also providing a strong social atmosphere with much to do. I would like to major in Aerospace but considering Buffalo is the only school to offer it I've included the others on my list. At Buffalo I would most likely be doing a double major in MechE and AeroE. Stony and Buffalo have both offered me $2.5k/yr in scholarships. I'm from Long Island and it would be nice to get away and have a change of scenery, but part of me feels that Stony has been on the rise lately and may become the premier SUNY University in the future. So which school has the best program? The best quality of life? and the most opportunities?

Sorry to tack this on but also which school is most reputable in Engineering and would allow me to have the farthest reach in terms of job prospects and graduate studies? I would like to have a job in the Aerospace industry in southern California if possible.

I would go with SUNY Stony Brook for engineering.
Better school in my opinion for engineering and the sciences, the best SUNY for science related majors.

Based off what you described, Stony Brook. It’s true you aren’t really going all that further away, but as the poster above me mentioned they’re great with sciences/math related majors.

You both feel that Stony Brook would provide better opportunities than Buffalo? On what basis? I understand that it is the strongest SUNY in the sciences, however Buffalo is ranked the same in Engineering. Buffalo also has my current major of choice, and would offer a better social experience from what I’ve been hearing, along with a more interesting locale. Would going to Stony over Buffalo really affect my opportunities when it comes to getting into a better graduate school and research?

Buffalo and Stony both have the best engineering programs in the SUNY system. Binghamton’s engineering=no good. Buffalo’s engineering is well respected and have many opportunities for students.

Waiting for somebody to say weather \o/

Don’t Stony Brook have smaller class sizes (though I guess that’s a personal preference)? Other than that I agree that they’re pretty similar, and if you’re really looking to get away Buffalo would be a better choice. Have you visited?

Both Buffalo and Stony Brook are known for having good engineering programs. I don’t think of one as having particularly better opportunities than the other.

Given that you want to major in Aerospace engineering, and Buffalo is the only one that offers it, the choice seems pretty obvious to me, if you can handle the Buffalo winters.

If your “major of choice” is only at Buffalo, I’d buy myself a good winter coat, hat, gloves and boots and go there. Two friends of my D are at Buffalo and both are very happy there.
