Engineering - Scholars Info

Was accepted into the College of Engineering and Scholars . Trying to decide/rank the different program options. Would love some feedback from current students. Do engineering students typically participate in the programs directly related to engineering? Would it be ok to choose the sports program or something else totally unrelated? What about best living options? Any feedback is most appreciated.

I’m not a student but thought that something to look at is where the particular scholars program is housed. The Dunn Sports and Wellness resides in Morrill Towers which is West campus. Many have written in other posts that West campus is far from everything, academic and social. I think important factors in choosing the program should include how near the living community is to his classes (engineering is North campus most likely), and if he’s interested in the listed “Events and Activities” for the particular program. So exciting! Good luck!

@new2osu Thanks for the info. Will definitely take it into consideration!

My son was accepted to Engineering and Scholars as well. ICE would have been his first choice but a room with 4 bunkbeds in it he did not find appealing. Therefore he opted for STEM or Green engineering–specifically for the new housing. They make you sign up for three. He put the Media one down as his third choice but it is on West Campus and may have the 4 beds to a room so if he gets that he will probably decline it.

There is also a non-scholars community - Engineering House that will be in Houston. I know it is not a scholars community but it seems somewhat similar–if you read about it.

@kooth12 Thank you for the info. My S is also leaning toward the same two. I think he is a little uneasy about doing something totally unrelated to Engineering.

There is also Humanitarian Engineering in one of the newer dorms but he wasn’t interested in that one. Houston House (STEM, Green and Engineering House (non scholars)) also has academic year housing. I read that they give preference to kids from out of state for that type of housing. That means they are open during breaks. While my kid will still come home it would be convenient if he has to go back a day early if he can’t get a flight, etc.

My other son at Va Tech has had problems getting the train back because it was fully booked so he has had to go back a day early. The dorms aren’t open so he had to walk across campus at 11 PM by himself (easily a half mile) and check into the Campus hotel to the tune of $160+ a night. Therefore the $125 per semester cost for Academic year housing would easily pay for itself for us.

@kooth12 Good to know. My S was also accepted to Va Tech so thank you for the info on that too!

Va Tech has what it calls 10 month housing or something like that. With all of these schools you just need to know to ask about it if you think it might be beneficial. It can be a little more expensive.
