New Scholar Options

I was not able to get admission into the Biological Sciences or Green Engineering Scholars Programs. However, they are inviting me to these other Scholar programs:

Advocates for Children and Education Scholars (ACES) (Steep-Smith Hall, South Campus)

Architecture Scholars (Drackett Tower, North Campus)

Humanitarian Engineering Scholars (Drackett Tower, North Campus)

Humanities Scholars (Baker Hall East, South Campus)

Sport and Wellness Scholars (Morrill Tower, West Campus)

I’m planning on majoring in Biology. So none of these are really exact fits for me, but I do understand that you don’t have to have a major in a Scholar’s program-related field to be in it. Right now, the two that I’m most interested in are Humanitarian Engineering (most science-related) and Humanities (I like politics and history).

Should I accept the invitations to any of these programs or just decline their offers? Or is this too great of an opportunity to miss out on? Can anyone recommend a program?

Depending on the person you are, I would recommend the Humanities. As much as I love the sciences, too much becomes dull.
Also, though not true for all employers, it may be best to have a non-science to show how well-rounded you are.
Not only do they state that you can go into a program away from your major, they also encourage you to do so.
That is what I’ve done (CompSci major vs. Intl. Affairs Scholars), and I think it’s more interesting that way.
Regardless, accepting a program looks better than declining.

Now, I am an incoming freshman, so I cannot give you first-hand experiences, but all (least most) of what I read about Scholars is positive. I cannot recall everything, but there is bound to be some minor detail that might upset you.
It’s what you like – maybe read a bit more about each program – and do what’s right. There are tons of other programs to enter (which you should still do!), but not everyone gets into Scholars, so I’d take it.

I don’t know if you’ve already chosen a program or not, but I am a current member of the Humanities Scholars and would highly recommend it. I am a Zoology major, so being in this program gives me a nice break from science classes. We are involved in a bunch of different activities (community service, book club, scholars trips, etc.), so you are bound to find something that interests you. Also, our program manager Ben is really great!
