I am wondering how many of the Premier ($15k), Enhanced ($10k), and Excellence ($7500) scholarships are given out annually and what my chances are at receiving one of these or any other kind of merit aid form UIUC?
I’m an in-state student form a private catholic high school:
34 ACT
5.01 wGPA
National Merit Commended
6 AP classes, many other honors classes
Class rank 6/198, but I don’t think my H.S. reported it
Another question for whoever can answer this: when do notifications typically come out, and how likely is it to get a scholarship if you were not picked as a James Scholar?
There is some useful information in the engineering scholarships FAQ.
@samlan16: Notifications will go out last week of Feb. and first week in March. I don’t know if/how being selected as a James Scholar is related to receiving a COE scholarship.
@azdrew11
On the number of scholarships awarded: “Funds vary from year to year but 100 freshmen will be awarded a College of Engineering Scholarship in a typical year.”
@Mtriplee Because being a James Scholar probably means that you have better stats than most of those admitted and thus are more likely to earn a scholarship.
My in-state child received admission for BioE (first and only choice) and was selected to be in the Chancellor’s Scholar Campus Honors Program (CHP). No merit scholarship was offered in this acceptance letter and it appears most offers will come out the last week of Feb or first week of March.
Stats: 35 / 4.0uw / 4.8w / top 1%. Will have 13 APs, 5s on seven so far. A Top and very large public HS in the state (1000 in class) . Good EC, leadership, community service and athletics (8 seasons and a Varsity captain).
Let’s post as the merit scholarships are awarded for CoE.
It depends on your major and what the profile of other accepted students looks like. Also, likelihood of merit scholarship in general goes up if you are in an under-represented demo. There is not a lot of merit $ to go around.
Two years ago ENG (quietly) changed the policy on JS for incoming freshman and the numbers went way down in some majors (some departments still have old info on their websites). You used to automatically qualify by ACT score, and this is no longer the case. Consequently, it is possible to receive merit $ without being offered JS, but I expect it is rare; I have only seen this 1st hand with a CS major. It may be less likely or impossible with some other majors.
Incidentally, the CS department suspended registration privileges for JSs last semester and reverted to a strict seniority based system. No word on next semester yet, or if there will be any adjustments to the qualification of JS going forward.

@Ethan1101 Yes around 10:45 CST.
I wouldn’t say that as I have no idea of the time schedule. Not to mention I already knew of the scholarship when I was admitted.
There is an award that appears in my ui-integrate self-service portal, but I haven’t received an email. It also doesn’t specificy which scholarship it is or if it is renewable. Does anyone know why this might be?
@Nedcone thank you!
Just trying to compare with my son’s.
He was admitted to Mechanical and so far has been offered a the Matthews Scholars, a non renewable Engineering fresh. scholarship and a Mechanical dept one for $3000/yr and the non renewable Chancellor Scholar one… We were hoping for a bit more for him, lol.
Here are his stats:
Valedictorian
36 ACT
5.425 gpa weighed
National Merit Finalst
U of I Chancellor Scholar
3 yr. Varsity sports/1 yr Captn.
All AP/Honors classes all 4 years.
Just found out there will be no college of engineering merit scholarship to accompany my child’s Chancellor’s Scholar Award for CHP. .Kind of disappointing for us. Even if the last two colleges we hear from are non-accetances, UIUC will be 2x the cost of other choices we will have with the merit already awarded. Definitely not a bad situation, but kind of takes the wind out of the sail espousing the exclusive nature of the Chancellor’s Scholar Award (125 total freshman from the University).
