Engineering schools where many freshmen have singles?

I posted this on the special needs forum, but haven't gotten many replies there, so I thought folks here may be able to help as well.

I have a HS sophomore son who has always been interested in becoming an engineer (leaning toward mechanical). When we visited engineering schools with his big brother, I wasn't taking careful notes, but my recollection was that a number of them put freshmen in QUADS! Due to some special needs, I believe this son will do best in a single room. So I am wondering if anyone can suggest schools with strong engineering programs where a freshman can get a single room and this isn't a weird or socially isolating thing. (His brother ended up at Cornell where this is the case. Chances of him wanting to go to the same school as his brother, even with only 1 year of overlap are slim.) Our preference is for schools in the northeast and schools that offer good merit money for strong stats are especially of interest. (No standardized test scores yet, but I would imagine will be competitive for most schools except the really tippy-top schools like MIT.)

Thanks!

anyone? Thanks in advance for any suggestions…

Hey MathmomVT - Pitt has alot of single options for frosh - most of the students are housed in the 3 “towers” which are cylindar shaped buildings in center of campus - one of the towers is completely singles so it doesn’t become isolating since everyone is in the same situation. [Litchfield Tower C](http://www.pc.pitt.edu/housing/halls/towerc.html)

They also have merit aid for good stats, lots of research opportunities for undergrad, and honor-level classes for the engineering curriculum (which cuts class sizes down). Entry level math/sciences classes are 120 at most which is large but not as large as say PSU or Cornell. Not sure if this is a good fit, or if mechE is strong or weak but could be worth a look.

Thanks Amanda, we’ll take a look :)
