Engineering Universities in France?

What is the process to applying to universities in France from the United States? I want to study engineering (civil), but I have a hard time finding information about it online. I hear that for public universities, anyone can attend, but the downside is that the dropout rate is high in the first year.

I have found some schools that I am interested in:
-University of Paris 6 - (I hear this is going to be combined with Paris-Sorbonne in 2018?)
-University of Lyon 1
-INSA, any campus is fine, but I would prefer Lyon
-Ecole Polytechnique (too hard maybe

Of course, I would want to go to a Grandes ecoles over a public university, but is that hard to do for an international applicant (cuz obviously its extremely hard for French nationals). I know that you dont need 2 years of Prepa for INSA, but im not sure about ecole polytechnique.

My main question is, if I were to apply to Grandes ecoles AND public universities in France from US, would they require my transcript, SAT/AP/Subject test scores, letters of recs, application/motivation/CV letters, interviews, etc? Their websites are not very helpful.

P.S. I know I have to take a French proficiency test like the DELF or something.

Merci

You may to look at here:

You can apply to INSA directly. You’ll need AP’s in calculus, physics, and a couple others, plus the French test (TFF? Test of French as a Foreign Language?..?) They have an international section with classes partially in English and French language support.
I don’t recommend the Universities for engineering - look into the IUT (selective programs that are alternatives to enter Grandes Ecoles, 50% admitted go through those). Teaching will be entirely in French.
