engineering

nv1993, brettwalking - I’m in a similar boat as you guys. I got accepted as undeclared but I want to do ChemE. Are you guys going to risk doing undeclared at UT and try transferring into your desired major or are you going to go to a different school altogether to pursue your desired major?

yeah apparently engineering was brutal this year

A lot of people from my school got accepted into engineering. One was 10%, 32 ACT into chemE, another was 9% 31 ACT into ASE, and another was 29% 2150 SAT, and he failed precalculus his sophomore year (also into ASE). They were all asian, upper-middle class, no special circumstances or anything.

i don’t really know what’s going on here lol.

guru, i’m going to risk it.

I have been accepted into A&M and Baylor for my desired major but i’ve wanted to go to UT since as long I can remember. I have no desire in going anywhere else, so i’m going to risk it and be undeclared. And who knows, maybe this is for the best, I might figure out that engineering is not my thing and major in something else.

Update.

I faxed a letter saying that I although I am accepted as an undeclared, I would like to try to get into the Electrical Engineering program. So I asked them to change my first choice major into Electrical & Computer Engineering. I finally got a response more than a month later.

The Office of Admissions has received your appeal. We expect to respond to all requests from admitted students for major changes by mid-April. Once the Committee has made a decision about your appeal, the Committee’s decision will be posted on this page. A letter will also be mailed to your permanent mailing address.

Do you guys think I have a shot, considering the program might be full by now?
Remember, I am in the top 5% of my class along with a heavy senior schedule, national honor society, and plenty of extracurriculars.

EE is one of the largest engineering departments along with, I believe, the highest acceptance rate. If there’s any engineering major you can get in to, it should be EE. Judging from this thread, the statistics really do seem brutal this year… sorry. But best of luck. I’d estimate a percentage for you but if it’s really this competitive this year then I can’t really say anything for sure.

Lets just hope it’s not full yet. crosses fingers

I am a girl from California and i was excepted as undeclared too, instead of mechanical engineering and I was wondering if I should risk and attend there as undeclared. Like how possible is it for me to end up graduating with a bachelors in engineering?

Well, good news.

UT accepted my appeal and I am now accepted into the Cockrell School of Engineering for Electric Engineering.

:)

^congrats nv! My appeal went through too and I’ve been admitted to the ChemE department in Cockrell now. Trying to decide between Berkeley and UT now, though. This is gonna be a really really tough decision.

Hey that’s pretty cool, congrats!
Good luck on your college decision (Hook’em)

Dude, I’m in same situation. I know Cal’s ChemE is ranked 2nd, UT’s ChemE ranked 5th. I know Cal will be great experience and the opportunities it will present to me will be awesome too. But I don’t know if it’s worth almost four times the cost of UT. California’s budget situation also frightens me.

What is your thinking on this?

I think both are great schools, and if you can afford it you should go to Cal. The opportunities available there are unmatchable. I’ve looked at the projected student budget, and it definitely seems like it can be cut to around 45k from 56k. If you can afford that, go for it. If not, UT is an amazing school as well so you’re essentially in a win-win situation here.

Hey nv1993 and guruofgreatness. How did yall figure out about your appeal’s acceptace was it on bealonghorn? Because I applied for an appeal for engineering also but I submitted mine kind of late but I just wanted to know where they tell you if your appeal has been accepted or denied.

yes it was on the bealonghorn application check page.
I also got a letter a few days after the notification.

alright, also after you sent in the letter did it show up on bealonghorn that they received it and it was being looked at? because nothing has changed on my bealonghorn but i know they received it because I emailed one of the admissions counselors.

Yes the page changed a few weeks after my request. I actually didn’t write the letter in the form of an appeal, I just asked for my major choice to change to EE. Luckily they counted it as an appeal.

So after a while(I think it was a few weeks), this came up on my page.
