I'm not sure if this double major is possible. Assuming it is, could I reasonably double major in English and Cognitive Science and also fulfill the pre-med requirements?

I have a decent interest in both majors. Thanks for any advice.

I think it is not realistic to combine all those interests since there is so little interlap amongst those disciplines. You would have no opportunity to take any courses that do not fulfill requirements for the majors or pre-med.

You might want to check out the PreMed Topics forum to see what the experienced members there think about double majors, minors, etc. and Med School admissions.

But hey, I thought you were going to do engineering and write on the side?? Some people are just too multi-faceted for their own good ;).

I thought about just doing engineering, but I think the major would be too difficult to leave me much time to write. I want to get a decent GPA for the potential of med school, so I would probably spend a lot of time studying if I did engineering.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll probably go with English and pre-med :)

Try to stay focused Luminouzz. Entering Yale is like getting to the front of the line at a wonderful buffet. you want to sample everything! Nothing wrong with that but know that amongst your fellow freshmen are many who are pursuing “pre-med” . Some keep it as an “option”, some are fiercely locked on it.

What you’ll see is a good amount of stress in Chem 110 or 115. After first semester, when lots of people who have never gotten less than an A in a science course, you get many who reconsider their pre-med ways. The cruel joke about Chem 115 – it made many Psychology majors (from ex pre-med students).

Sample and explore – but if you want to be a serious med school applicant later, don’t forget to excel at your prime courses.

A good choice, I have one in my house!

Unfortunately Med schools look at your total gpa, with your science gpa expected to be only about 0.05 - 0.1 lower.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try to stay focused :)

People will always tell you that you can’t do certain things, but only you know your own capabilities.

I would suggest that instead of doing Cog Sci, if you’re pre-med, to do Psych-Neuro Track b/c that allows you to apply a ton of MCDB (bio) & MB&B (biochem) courses toward your major, which means your pre-med courses will actually be semi-useful.

I did Directed Studies in freshman year and am double-majoring in Chemistry & Psych-Neuroscience. I’m done with all my major and pre-med requirements except for 1 semester of bio lab and pchem lab. Honestly, you’re not going to MIT. It’ll be fine.
