English and creative writing? PLUS: transfers?

I gather that Mcgill's impressive academic reputation stems from the sciences, however, I know next to nothing about the English Department. I fell in love with Montreal this summer while on vacation, and I am interested in applying for transfer as a Soph. next year. My interests are rooted in both writing (fiction) and film (more so production then theory). From the little research I performed, I understand that Mcgill does not offer any film and/or video production major. But, I would be willing to fill my thirst for film with summer courses and other programs of the sort.

After undergrad. school, I currently plan on applying to graduate film schools. Obviously that might change in the future, so, I figure an undergraduate degree from an "ivy-caliber" university would indeed be a worthwhile acquisition.

How competitive are the students within the English department? Also, does Mcgill's infamous grade deflation impact English students as much as med. students?

The only other school of interest in Mcgill is Concordia. They offer a decent film production program, but obviously the university as a whole is leagues below Mcgill. With that in mind, what opinions or experiences have you had with Concordia students and the university itself?

Finally, since I would be a transfer student, what are the admissions statistics? Do you suggest applying after my freshman year at another university, or waiting until after sophomore year?

Thanks in advance to any replies.

Hey! I'm only going to McGill in Sept, so I can't answer all of your questions, but I do know that Concordia's creative writing program is excellent. Even though it's not on McGill's level internationally, it might be a good choice if you're serious about writing and film, since the quality of the program itself is so high.

I am also interested in English or writing as a possible major or minor. I've also had the problem of finding information about these programs at McGill, and their quality etc. I know McGill is known for sciences, but there are many students in the arts, and I couldn't imagine it having a a BAD English program. I don't think it offers a creative writing major, though when I asked about this some months ago someone posted that there is a program where you can take creative writing courses at Concordia.

Concordia seems like a decent option... If anyone does know about Mcgill's English dept. and/or creative writing program, any information would be wonderful.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I believe there is a program through McGill where you can take more creative writing courses at Concordia. Havn't confirmed this though, or even researched it.
