English as a second language

Do english as a second language courses count towards the “Two courses in English Composition” for UC transfers?

They never said they didn’t count anywhere but now that the application is open, it says “Prior to transfer, will you complete two transferable college courses in English composition (not including English as a second language courses)?”

Does this mean I’m screwed?

No.

They do take a look at all the remedial English courses (in terms of reviewing process). However, if it isn’t specifically “English Composition” or “Critical Thinking English” it probably will not transfer. Your college (UW Madison) should have those courses! There should be 3-4 courses assigned specific for this portion!
LACC for example, we have English 101 & 102 (Composition) and English 103 & Philosophy 5 (Critical Thinking) to complete the English portion of IGETC.

@laccstudent Thanks! It seems like I’ll be taking 18 credits this semester haha

@laccstudent But the reason I asked was because ESL 118 at UW Madison qualifies for the Communication A requirement.

@derprage I see, I’ve found out about UW Madison’s GE requirements.

While it will fulfill the GE requirement at UW, it’s likely that it will be considered as Remedial English by UC.
English 100, Introduction to College Composition
English 201, Intermediate Composition
Looks like these two will fulfill your UW Madison GE (Both A&B) and might fulfill UC GE/breadth English portion as well.

However, looks like you can’t take either of them for Fall (for now).

I do recommend that you talk to your counselor and email UC (the campus you want to transfer to) transfer adviser at English department. It’s important that you show them the syllabus for ESL 118 to see if they will accept it! This is important. Keep all of your syllabus for English and other courses as they’ll need it to approve for articulation and transfer of credit.

@laccstudent Thank you so much for your help! I’ll get in touch with UC Berkeley admissions and see how it goes. Yes, I literally can’t take English 100 and I’ll have to do ESL 118 to take English 201 (which I planned to anyway Spring 2017).

@derprage Yes! Perhaps ESL 118 will transfer over, as long as you explain that ESL 118 is a bridge course for English 201!! Good luck!

@laccstudent http://admissions.berkeley.edu/transfer_info according to this, both English 117 and English 118 count for one half of the reading and composition requirement. Does this mean I’m in the clear?

@derprage Hey! This is a really useful resource! I needed this!!! Thank you!
One half just indicates that you have to take two of them.
Just like mentioned in their own GE requirement.

Take two courses and you’ll be clear. If you took 117 and if you are about to 118, then you have nothing to worry about.
IGETC does this too, you must take two English courses.
