English department

How strong is the English department at WashU?

bump (10 char)

bump 10char

it's great! i'm an english major and i really love it. some interesting classes i have taken are : crime and literature, argumentation, children's literature, epistolary novels (epistolary = letters), the economy of love...

Excellent! I'm glad to hear that. What do you plan to do after graduating?

Can anyone also tell us about creative writing at Wash U.? My d. may be interested, but the rep. that came to her school said there is no creative writing at Wash U. The catalogue (on line) clearly states different. So either the rep. did not know, or the website is old, and it is no longer available as a concentration?

I did a little more research on the dept and apparently their creative writing concentration (which does, most definitely, exist) is one of the best in the nation, with their MFA (master of fine arts) in writing ranked as the 10th in the nation (<a href="http://impact.wustl.edu/ranked.html%5B/url%5D">http://impact.wustl.edu/ranked.html</a>); One of the english profs -- after sitting in on his class yesterday -- talked to me for quite awhile, extolling the strength of the creative writing faculty. So it sounds like the English dept as a whole (in particular the composition portion) is pretty formidable.

i am planning on going to law school (or teach for america, then law school) when i graduate... one more year! ahh!

there are definitely creative writing classes. however, there is not a writing MAJOR- that is probably what the rep was talking about. there is an english literature major, and six (or nine, maybe) credits in english composition (writing) classes can be counted toward the major. or, you could go with a writing minor, in which you would take all english composition classes. ecomp classes include poetry writing, fiction writing, etc.. i took one about writing nonfiction using the techniques of fiction writers... really interesting!

i read on ratemyprofessors.com that rosenzwieg (?) is to be avoided... what's the deal? He looks like a nice guy on his faculty profile online. Also, are any of you involved in critical theory in english classes?

don't take classes with professors whose last names begin with "r."

wait, why?!
