I am a senior in AP Lit right now. My AP English Language teacher last year said that the English Literature SAT II contains themes and material that are taught only in AP Lit, and she recommended not taking the subject test until at least December when we have a semester of AP Lit under our belts.

I am wondering, from people who have experience with this test, how good this advice really is? Because I'd like to take the Literature SAT II in October. I got an 800 on the CR section of the SAT and I consider critical reading to be my one of my strongest subjects. But will I suffer from not having literature?

Your teacher is correct. My son took it without AP Lit and only finished less than half a semester’s work in Literature. He was also unable to study for it either as he was studying for his SAT II Math primarily and Chemistry partly. He got a 690 for the Lit.

A fundamental understanding of the MC questions from AP Lang is pretty much all you need. There are no concepts on the test that are found only in AP Lit’s curriculum, albeit maybe a few poetry terms, but there are only ~4 questions like those on the test.

The important thing to do is take practice tests until your are familiar with how the actual test is.
